Zootopia 2 Box Office Smashes Yet Another Major Record In A Single Day

The new movie Zootopia 2 is already breaking records, even before its first full weekend in cinemas. This 2025 sequel follows the hugely successful 2016 Disney film Zootopia, which earned over $1 billion worldwide.

The new film launched on Wednesday, November 26th, just before Thanksgiving, and is expected to be very successful. It had the second-highest pre-release ticket sales of any Disney animated movie, only behind the 2024 hit Moana 2.

As a huge animation fan, I was thrilled to read in Variety that Zootopia 2 absolutely crushed it in China! It made a whopping $34 million on its opening day, which is the biggest single-day haul ever for an American animated film there. Apparently, it’s also the best opening day for any U.S. movie in China since F9: The Fast Saga came out back in May 2021, and it’s already the tenth-highest opening day ever for an American film in that market!

Thanks to a strong opening in China, Zootopia 2 has now earned $41.6 million internationally. The film’s earnings are expected to keep rising, as it has only launched in 17 countries so far and will be available in most major markets by the end of Sunday. Japan will release the movie a bit later, starting on the first weekend of December.

As of now, Zootopia 2 has brought in $80.1 million globally. This impressive number makes it the 44th highest-grossing film of 2025 worldwide, even before its official opening weekend in cinemas.

The strong performance of Zootopia 2 follows closely after Ne Zha II became the first film ever to earn over $1 billion in a single country – China. Ne Zha II has since become the highest-grossing animated movie ever, reaching a massive $1.902 billion worldwide, surpassing the $1.699 billion earned by Inside Out 2.

While Zootopia 2 didn’t open as strongly as Ne Zha II (which earned $296.6 million in China during its opening weekend), its performance suggests that Chinese audiences are increasingly interested in animated films. Even though China has become more careful about which American movies it releases, Zootopia 2‘s success is a positive sign for the future of American animated films internationally.

Following Disney’s upcoming Zootopia 2, several other popular animated sequels are planned for release in theaters, including Toy Story 5, Ice Age: Boiling Point, Frozen III, and Shrek 5. This means the new movie’s success might not last long, as its records could be broken fairly quickly.
