Star Wars: Starfighter Composer Confirmed By Shawn Levy

Shawn Levy is excited to begin working on Star Wars: Starfighter and has hired a highly skilled composer to create the movie’s music.

Director Rob Levy revealed in an interview on the podcast On Film…with Kevin McCarthy that Thomas Newman will compose the music for Star Wars: Starfighter. Levy expressed his admiration for Newman’s work and shared his enthusiasm about collaborating with such a renowned musician. Newman is a highly acclaimed composer with 15 Academy Award nominations.

You really wouldn’t believe how much I love Tom Newman’s work. If I had to list my ten favorite film scores, at least five of them would be his – including the music from Shawshank, Road to Perdition, Nemo, and American Beauty. He’s a true master.

Levy noted that the music for Star Wars: Starfighter should feel classically inspired, but distinct from the work of John Williams, who composed the original Star Wars score. He explained that while some influence from Williams’ iconic music was acceptable, he was looking for a composer who could create a powerful and unforgettable soundtrack.

I’ve been considering the film’s music, and I want it to feel classically influenced. However, I don’t want to simply use remixes of John Williams’ existing music. While his work can be an inspiration, I’m looking for a composer who, like Williams, isn’t afraid to create strong, memorable themes and deliver a genuinely heartwarming score.

I was so thrilled when Rob Levy contacted John Newman – he’s a huge fan of Newman’s work! He reached out to see if Newman would be interested in composing the music for Star Wars: Starfighter. Luckily, after reading the script and hearing Rob’s vision for the film, Newman signed on. Rob was absolutely ecstatic to have someone with Newman’s talent join the project, and honestly, so was I!

I reached out to Tom Newman – I’ve been a fan of his work for a long time. I asked if he’d be interested in the project, and he asked to see the script and hear my ideas. I sent them over, and thankfully, he agreed! I’m really thrilled about it.

Star Wars: Starfighter is a standalone story, not directly connected to the main Skywalker saga. It’s set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The movie is written by Jonathan Tropper and stars Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027.
