As NCIS approaches a significant moment, Sean Murray is hinting at exciting things to come for McGee and Torres in season 23. The show has seen a welcome increase in viewers this TV season. After losing its position as the most-watched procedural to Tracker and then seeing ratings decline further, NCIS is now regaining popularity and attracting a larger audience.
The current season of NCIS (season 23) is proving to be much stronger thanks to its improved storytelling. Despite already having a dedicated audience, the show is winning back viewers with engaging storylines. This season has explored the fallout from Parker’s father’s death, hinted at a possible relationship between Knight and Torres, and even brought back McGee’s author persona, Thom E. Gemcity. Plus, NCIS recently did its first-ever crossover event with NCIS: Origins.
NCIS is getting ready to air its 500th episode! In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, cast member Murray Perera discussed the upcoming milestone and hinted at exciting developments in season 23. He promises some intense storylines are ahead and assures viewers that the drama will be genuine, without misleading twists. You can find his complete statement below.
The show is really succeeding, and I believe it’s because we’re constantly striving to innovate. We’re always developing new versions of the show, and this particular episode is a departure from our typical format. After 500 episodes, we’re determined to keep things fresh and challenging instead of simply repeating what’s easy or predictable.
This year feels particularly strong, and reaching 500 episodes is a huge milestone. Everyone involved is working harder than ever and we’re incredibly excited about the stories we’re telling. We’ve had some great moments, and we have even better ones coming up – things are definitely different this season. We’re planning some truly shocking surprises – not just minor twists, but genuinely jaw-dropping moments. We’ve got a couple of unexpected developments involving familiar faces from the NCIS universe that we think fans will be really surprised by.
It’s fantastic that we’re still able to surprise people after 500 episodes. With such a long history, viewers have an idea of what to expect, so it’s really enjoyable to throw in unexpected twists, like we did in this episode, and with some other exciting things we have planned for this year. I honestly haven’t been bored for a second, and I feel like we’re telling stories at our best. I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished this year.
Though McGee wasn’t one of Gibbs’ first team members, he’s been on NCIS since the very beginning – season one. This means he’s been involved in every version of MCRT and has seen all the changes when cast members came and went. Of course, Murray is supposed to promote the show, as that’s his job at CBS. However, there’s a difference between encouraging viewers to watch and making such bold predictions. It’s hard to believe he’d make these kinds of promises unless NCIS season 23 truly has some big storylines planned.

This news is definitely sparking a lot of debate about potential shocking plot twists. Throughout its many seasons, NCIS has surprised viewers with unexpected storylines, including the heartbreaking deaths of characters like Kate, Jenny, and even Franks. It makes you wonder if the showrunner is hinting at another major character’s death within the Major Crimes Response Team. While Parker losing his father was sad, a team member’s death would likely be even more impactful. If it happens, it couldn’t come at a worse time, as Parker’s team is finally starting to gel like the previous iterations. It’s also worth remembering that there have been ongoing rumors about Sean Murray potentially leaving his role as McGee.
While a major character death can create a shocking plot twist, NCIS might have other surprises in store for viewers. Hints suggest Emily Wickersham could reprise her role as Ellie Bishop, which would be a welcome development. Until then, fans are left to speculate about the twists showrunner Steven D. Binder is hinting at.
The NCIS franchise airs every Tuesday, starting at 8 PM ET, on CBS.
