Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1: Kali/Eight’s Surprising Return Explained

The first part of Stranger Things season 5 brought back a character many viewers believed was lost, but their return was both surprising and heartbreaking.

In a recent interview with Variety, the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, discussed their reasons for bringing back Kali, also known as Eight (played by Linnea Berthelsen), in season 2. They also explained how her return might impact Eleven’s story (played by Millie Bobby Brown). We saw Eight being held prisoner by the military in the first part of the season.

We really wanted viewers to finish the show feeling like every storyline was resolved and everything made sense. We didn’t want any loose ends or unanswered questions, and it was important that all the pieces connected. There was definitely one plot point that almost didn’t quite fit.

We’re big fans of Linnea and felt she didn’t get a fair chance to shine in one episode from Season 2. Bringing her back was about giving her that opportunity, but we wanted it to feel meaningful, not just a forced appearance.

When we finished the season, we saw that bringing her character back was crucial for completing Eleven’s storyline the way we envisioned. It wasn’t just about tying up loose ends; there was a genuine narrative purpose to her return.

We filmed Season 2 of the show very quickly, rushing to meet a Halloween release date. Our initial script wasn’t successful, and we only had a week left to completely rewrite it. Looking back, we don’t feel like we ever fully perfected that season.

We were disappointed we couldn’t resolve things for Linnea earlier. We really enjoyed working with her and believed she was a great asset to the show, so we were thrilled to have her return this season. I think she does a fantastic job, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her work.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, are determined to provide satisfying answers to all fan questions and tie up every loose end in the show. They don’t want the series to suffer the same fate as Game of Thrones, which received a lot of criticism for its disappointing conclusions to beloved characters’ storylines.

We don’t yet know exactly how Eight will help in the final battle of the Netflix series, but in season two, she demonstrated the ability to alter people’s perceptions. This power could be incredibly useful when facing Vecna in the climactic fight.

When Kali and Eleven worked together, Kali trained Eleven to become more powerful. Now, with Eleven’s enhanced abilities and the recent discovery that Will also has powers – revealed during their difficult fight in episode 4 – they have a significantly better chance of finally defeating the Upside Down.

The final season of Stranger Things will conclude with Volume 2 premiering on December 25th, followed by the series finale on December 31st, available on Netflix and in some cinemas.
