Call the Midwife set for multiple deaths as disaster strikes in “heart-rending” Christmas special

Viewers of Call the Midwife might be surprised by several character deaths in the upcoming Christmas specials. The show will be back with two holiday episodes shortly, and some of the stories will take place in Hong Kong.

Recent plot details show that Fred and Violet arrive in the city to find immediate disaster: the Branch House in Kowloon has collapsed, resulting in many deaths.

A quick rescue mission is launched, sending a team from Nonnatus House to Hong Kong. Back in London, Sister Julienne and Sister Hilda confront a gangster trying to break into their new home, and Dr. Turner and Shelagh locate Esther and her sick son.

What to Read Next

In London, Mr. Fischer shares the devastating news of his terminal cancer diagnosis with Trixie and Geoffrey. Meanwhile, Rosalind and Joyce throw a cheerful party, and Sister Catherine begins investigating the fate of Queenie’s child.

Molly Vevers, who plays Sister Catherine, described the recent storyline as deeply emotional, but also said it fit well with the overall festive spirit of the episode (according to the BBC).

Speaking about the dramatic events in Hong Kong, Jenny Agutter, who plays Sister Julienne, revealed that the mission building has collapsed due to a sinkhole. She explained that the ground simply gave way beneath it.

After a devastating event that caused loss of life and widespread destruction, many people, including orphaned children and mothers, were left without homes. A small group decided to travel to Hong Kong to offer assistance, hoping to secure a new location and provide essential care.

She explained that all the stories share a common theme: the feeling of instability. They largely focus on people being uprooted and how those changes can lead to something positive and new.

Okay, so after those special episodes, Call the Midwife is officially coming back for a fifteenth season! And get this – they’re also working on a movie and a prequel series! I’m so hyped to see where they take the story next.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
