The latest movie in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe premiered in the US on May 2nd to overwhelmingly positive reactions from both viewers and critics. Despite not performing well at the box office, the film’s quality and fan base remain strong. It currently boasts an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, demonstrating its positive impact. Now, fans who missed it in theaters – or want to rewatch – can stream Thunderbolts on Disney+ in up to 4K. While the film only earned $382 million in theaters, making it one of the MCU’s least profitable, it quickly became the most-streamed movie in the US and the third most-streamed worldwide in just one day, according to FlixPatrol.
Thunderbolts centers on a team of super-powered individuals who initially work with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, but ultimately unite to save the world from the threat of Bob’s powerful alter ego, The Void. The film benefited from featuring characters audiences already knew from other Marvel movies, but it exceeded expectations thanks to the surprisingly strong connection and teamwork between these unlikely heroes.
How To Watch Thunderbolts* In Disney+?
You can now watch Thunderbolts on Disney+. If you already have a Disney+ subscription, it’s free to stream on any device. If you don’t have a subscription, signing up is simple through the Disney+ website or app. In the US, a Disney+ subscription costs $11.99 per month, and an ad-free Premium plan is available for $18.99 per month. Disney+ subscribers can enjoy Thunderbolts in Ultra HD quality.
The main drawback is this: Marvel fans have become accustomed to seeing many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films released in IMAX Enhanced format since Disney announced support for it in 2021. IMAX Enhanced expands the image, making it roughly 25% larger during certain scenes compared to standard versions. While popular MCU movies like Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thor: Ragnarok, and Avengers: Infinity War are available in this expanded format, the upcoming Thunderbolts movie currently isn’t—at least not yet.
When Thunderbolts started streaming on Disney+ on August 27th, many viewers noticed it wasn’t available in IMAX Enhanced. Disney+ Help on X (formerly Twitter) explained that the format wasn’t currently offered for the movie, but suggested fans watch for future updates, as new titles and formats are added often. This means there’s still a chance Thunderbolts will be available in IMAX Enhanced later, offering viewers the highest quality visual experience.
Other Options To Watch Thunderbolts* Online
You can also buy or rent Thunderbolts online. It’s available to rent for $5.99 on Amazon, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV, giving you 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish once you begin. If you’d like to own it, you can purchase the movie for $9.99 on those same platforms.
The movie is available to download in ultra high definition, high definition, and standard definition on all devices, and it costs the same regardless of the quality. Each download also includes extra features, like a behind-the-scenes look at how the film was made, an explanation of the movie’s title, and a humorous clip of the actors playfully reimagining their characters in a therapy session.
Has Thunderbolts* Been Released On Blu-Ray & DVD?
If you prefer owning physical copies, Thunderbolts is available on Blu-Ray and DVD at stores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Currently, Amazon sells the DVD for $19.96, the Blu-ray for $23.05, and the 4K version for $49.21. A digital copy is included with every disc, letting you enjoy the movie in both formats.
Many DVD and Blu-ray releases come with bonus features. These can include in-depth looks at the characters Bob and the Thunderbolts, as well as how the movie was made. You might also find deleted scenes, bloopers, and commentary from the director. However, the specific extras available depend on which version and format you buy.
Is Thunderbolts* A Good Movie?
Thunderbolts is a standout superhero film and a must-see for fans. You don’t need to be familiar with other movies or series in the franchise to enjoy it. The story begins with Yelena Belova, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent, and Ghost being sent to an O.X.E. facility by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine with the intention of killing each other. They quickly discover it’s a setup, and after a fight where U.S. Agent kills Taskmaster, the remaining heroes team up to escape before the facility is destroyed.
The film’s central character, Bob, is discovered in the same facility where Valentina conducted human experiments. As they attempt to control Bob’s abilities, Bucky and Alexei join the effort. You don’t need to know anything about these characters’ pasts to connect with them or understand the story.
This film delves into the complicated feelings and motivations of its characters, making it easy to connect with them despite their flaws. Bob is a particularly compelling addition to the MCU, as he struggles with two distinct personalities: the incredibly powerful but arrogant Sentry, and the destructive, shadowy Void. Ultimately, the Thunderbolts must reach Bob on a personal level to help him reconcile these two sides of himself, creating a surprisingly heartfelt and relatable story.
One of the best things about Thunderbolts is its villains. Unlike some stories that feature purely monstrous antagonists – though those can work well, like Galactus in Fantastic Four: First Steps – Thunderbolts offers a more realistic and relatable conflict. The main villain, Valentina, isn’t a superpowered being or a world-ending threat. She’s a normal person – a government operative with the power to manipulate events and a strong desire for control, making her a much more believable and compelling antagonist.
The Thunderbolts are a fantastic superhero team thanks to the actors’ incredible performances and the strong connection they share on screen. It’s easy to become a fan because the characters are relatable underdogs you can’t help but cheer for. The movie also features enjoyable action, witty humor, and a surprisingly heartfelt story.
Thunderbolts Has One Of The Best Casts In An MCU Movie
While Thunderbolts isn’t a perfect movie, the fantastic cast really saves it. These actors have all impressed us in other Marvel films, and they effortlessly create a believable and engaging team dynamic. A great superhero movie always hinges on a team that feels like they truly belong together, and Thunderbolts delivers on that front.
Florence Pugh really stood out in Thunderbolts. Her character is deeply layered, and Pugh brilliantly portrays both her inner sadness and difficult choices, all while being genuinely funny. She brings a unique depth to the role, making the character both flawed and incredibly likable – a surprisingly difficult combination to pull off.
Everyone in the cast brings something special to the movie. Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Bucky has made him a truly memorable character, largely because Stan manages to be likable even when playing such a serious and moody role. Plus, Wyatt Russell and David Harbour are incredibly funny as U.S. Agent and Alexei Shostakov, but they still feel like real, believable characters.
Seriously, I think the casting of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina is one of Marvel’s smartest moves ever. She brings that same fantastic energy from shows like Seinfeld and Veep, but adds this really cool, slightly creepy edge to the character. It’s amazing because you know Valentina is a bad person, totally beyond redemption, and yet you often find yourself hoping she wins! That’s all thanks to Louis-Dreyfus – she’s just so charming, dynamic, and completely takes charge of every scene. It’s fascinating how they’ve created this character who seems vulnerable at first, but is actually incredibly powerful.
Lewis Pullman is the heart of Thunderbolts, delivering a fantastic performance as three distinct characters. He portrays Bob as kind, innocent, and humorous. As Sentry, he’s incredibly powerful and reserved, projecting a sense of superiority without needing many words. And as the Void, he embodies a chilling presence that makes him almost impossible to fully understand.
