After a break of over three years, Stranger Things has returned for its last season. And it looks like a character who didn’t play a major role before might become important as the story wraps up, based on what happened in the first two episodes.
The latest episode of Stranger Things Season 5 dramatically kicked off with a demogorgon attacking Hawkins and kidnapping Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike and Nancy. The episode revealed that Holly, played by Nell Fisher, is central to the season’s storyline. Though listed as “The Vanishing of…” in the Netflix menu, the episode is officially titled “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler,” mirroring the series’ first episode, “The Vanishing of Will Byers,” which featured Will being taken to the Upside Down in 1983. This suggests a parallel between the two disappearances and highlights Holly’s importance to the current events.
The fifth season starts on November 3, 1987, just before the four-year mark of Will’s disappearance. Eighteen months have passed since the gates to the Upside Down opened at the end of the last season, and Hawkins is now under military control. Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton), who’s in charge of the government operation, is actively searching for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). However, the biggest danger remains Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), who is secretly planning his next move while hidden in the Upside Down.

The season began with Holly telling Mike about her imaginary friend, Mr. Whatsit—a name inspired by a character from the classic novel A Wrinkle in Time. She believed he was protecting her from the creatures in Hawkins. However, the latest episode revealed Mr. Whatsit is actually Vecna, disguised as Henry Creel, and his motives are far from friendly. He’s planning to abduct other children from Hawkins and bring them to a mental prison—a world built from his own memories and twisted desires.
After Will realizes his visions let him see what Vecna is seeing through the Upside Down, the group devises a plan. They attach a tracker to the demogorgon Vecna sends after his next target, a boy named Derek Turnbow, hoping to follow the creature back to Vecna’s hideout and ultimately find Holly.
Considering what might happen with Holly in future episodes, Mike described her Dungeons & Dragons figurine, Holly the Heroic, as a cleric with magical protective powers and the ability to teleport. This could hint that, like Will, Holly will develop a connection to the Upside Down and unlock hidden abilities. With the recent discovery that Max is trapped in Vecna’s mental world, Holly now has a knowledgeable ally who could help her understand and develop those powers.
I’m so excited! The first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 are finally here! And it doesn’t stop there – Volume 2, with episodes 5 through 7, will be released on December 25th. Then, we’ll get the extended finale on December 31st. It’s going to be an amazing end to the series!
