Agatha Christie is famous for writing a huge number of murder mystery novels. Throughout her career, from 1921 to 1976, she created seventy-four novels, plus many short story collections and plays. While Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are her best-known detectives, she also wrote a popular series featuring the sleuthing pair, Tommy and Tuppence.
Tommy and Tuppence are a pair of characters featured in four novels and a collection of short stories by Agatha Christie. They were introduced in 1922’s The Secret Adversary, shortly after her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Interestingly, these characters also appear in Christie’s final novel, Postern of Fate, which hasn’t yet been adapted for film or television.
Tommy and Tuppence Are a Fun and Exciting Investigative Duo
While characters like Hercule Poirot are precise and Miss Marple is kind and quiet, Tommy and Tuppence gave Christie the chance to create bolder, more thrilling heroes. Thomas Beresford and his wife, Prudence – known as Tommy and Tuppence – debuted in Christie’s second book, The Secret Adversary, where they establish a detective agency called “The Young Adventurers, Ltd.”
In The Secret Adversary, Tommy and Tuppence are just friends, not yet married, and they’re both out of work and eager for excitement. Uniquely, they grow older throughout the series, beginning as young adults in their twenties in The Secret Adversary and ultimately appearing as seniors in their seventies by Postern of Fate.
According to the official Agatha Christie website, Tommy and Tuppence were the characters she most enjoyed writing. This isn’t surprising, considering Christie often expressed mixed feelings about Hercule Poirot – despite his popularity, she sometimes grew frustrated with him.
Ariadne Oliver is a character who assists Poirot in several stories. She’s a crime novelist and, in many ways, a reflection of Agatha Christie herself. Ariadne frequently complains about the popular detective she invented – a character she dislikes – which mirrors Christie’s own feelings about Poirot.
Tommy and Tuppence gave Christie the chance to create more playful and exciting characters. While Tommy tended to be the more serious and level-headed of the two, Tuppence’s lively and spontaneous nature led to many entertaining situations and adventures for them both. Their romantic relationship also became a key element throughout the series.
Tommy and Tuppence begin their adventures as friends in The Secret Adversary, but they fall in love and get married before the novel ends. The series continues to follow their life together, with subsequent books like Partners in Crime showing them grow older. By the final book, Postern of Fate, they are both in their seventies.
Postern of Fate Sees Tommy and Tuppence Tackling a Cold Case
I just finished watching a delightful mystery featuring Tommy and Tuppence, and let me tell you, things get interesting quickly! They’ve settled into a new life, even buying a house in a lovely resort town. But it’s inside that house where the real story begins. Along with the property, they inherit the previous owner’s book collection, and Tuppence stumbles upon a cryptic message hidden within one of the volumes. That single discovery launches them headfirst into a brand new, intriguing investigation.
Tuppence discovered a message hidden in a book that said Mary Jordan didn’t die of natural causes, but was murdered by someone present. The writer believed they knew the killer. When Tuppence tried to locate Mary Jordan’s grave, she instead found the grave of Alexander Parkinson, a fourteen-year-old boy—and the person who had written the note.
Tuppence begins researching the history of their house and the people who lived there before them. She discovers that Mary used to work as a governess for the Parkinsons. While everyone believed Mary died in an accident – supposedly from eating salad containing poisonous leaves – Tommy and Tuppence suspect something else, especially after finding a mysterious note.
The investigators began interviewing locals who knew the Parkinsons and Mary while she worked for them. They learned that Mary’s death was shrouded in mystery, and that she had secretly been working with the government on a new submarine project.
Tommy served in World War I, and the story The Secret Adversary begins with his return home and reunion with Tuppence. His wartime experiences and contacts prove useful as he and Tuppence investigate Mary, discovering she wasn’t simply an assistant – she was actually a British spy.
As Tommy and Tuppence uncover more of the truth, the situation becomes increasingly perilous. Someone sends a clear warning by murdering their gardener, hoping to scare them into stopping their investigation. The danger escalates when Tuppence is shot in the shoulder while walking their dog, Hannibal, though thankfully the injury isn’t fatal.
The novel Postern of Fate is set around the time of World War I. Mary discovered evidence of a hidden group working against the government, but she was murdered before she could finish revealing what she knew.
There Have Been Many Tommy and Tuppence Adaptations
Although Postern of Fate hasn’t been made into a movie, play, or radio show, many of Agatha Christie’s other Tommy and Tuppence stories have been adapted for different media. James Warwick and Francesca Annis were the first to play Tommy and Tuppence on screen in the 1982 film The Secret Adversary, and they later reprised their roles in the 1983 ten-part miniseries Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime.
The story Partners in Crime is part of a collection of short stories by Agatha Christie. In 2015, a television series featuring Tommy and Tuppence was created with David Walliams and Jessica Raine. Though named after the short story collection, the series actually adapted the novels The Secret Adversary and N or M?.
French director Pascal Thomas adapted Agatha Christie’s By the Pricking of My Thumbs, the third book featuring detectives Tommy and Tuppence, releasing it as Mon petit doigt m’a dit…. This was his second film based on the Tommy and Tuppence series.
The ITV series Agatha Christie’s Marple, which aired from 2004 to 2013 with Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie playing Miss Marple, adapted the novel By the Pricking of My Thumbs into a Marple mystery. In this TV version, Miss Marple teams up with Tuppence to solve the case, as Tommy is absent.
The Upcoming Tommy and Tuppence Series Could Finally Bring Postern of Fate to the Screen
I’m so excited about the new Tommy and Tuppence series! They’ve cast some great actors – I can’t wait to see them as Tuppence and Tommy. While we don’t know which of the books they’re adapting yet, the really interesting thing is that it’s going to be set in the present day, which is a fresh take on the classic stories!
The original stories follow Tommy and Tuppence through many years, and most actors playing them are young adults. A new adaptation could be interesting if it showed different actors portraying the characters at various stages of their lives.
A series following Tommy and Tuppence throughout their entire lives – from their adventurous twenties to their retirement in a resort town – would be fantastic. Plus, many fans are hoping to finally see an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s last novel.
Although published a year before Agatha Christie’s death, Postern of Fate wasn’t intended as her last book. Christie had actually completed the final novels featuring Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple in the 1940s, preparing them in case of her unexpected passing. Sleeping Murder, the last case for Miss Marple, appeared several months after Christie died in 1976.
Christie may have revisited Tommy and Tuppence for a final story as a way to lovingly say goodbye to characters she particularly cherished, and who grew older with her over the years. Many fans hope this book will be adapted into a film or TV series, as a fitting tribute to Christie and her beloved characters.
