Michael Bay Action Thriller Ambulance Is Blowing Up on Netflix

Michael Bay, the director known for huge hits like Armageddon and Transformers, has a 2022 film that’s recently gaining popularity on Netflix. While he’s famous for those blockbusters, this particular movie had been largely overlooked until now.

As of November 26th, the action thriller Ambulance is the second most popular movie on Netflix in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. The film, starring Kier O’Donnell, Eliza González, and Garret Dillahunt, is a remake of the 2005 Danish movie with the same name and is currently just behind Champagne Problems at number one. Ambulance is followed by In Your Dreams, The Carman Family Deaths, and KPop Demon Hunters in the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively. Michael Bay’s 2005 film The Island is also performing well, landing at number seven on Netflix’s Top 10 list.

Written by Chris Fedak, this movie didn’t do well in theaters when it came out in 2022, only making $52.3 million despite costing $40 million to produce. While audiences enjoyed it – giving it an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – critics were less impressed, with a score of 68%. The story centers on Will Sharp, a war hero played by Gyllenhaal, who needs money urgently to cover his wife’s medical expenses. When his brother, Danny, can’t offer a loan, he proposes a risky solution: a large bank robbery to save Will’s wife’s life.

An Underrated Michael Bay Film

Though not one of Michael Bay’s most famous films, Ambulance follows Danny, who persuades his brother Will to participate in what seems like a simple bank robbery. However, the heist quickly spirals out of control, resulting in a police shootout. Forced to flee with only the cash they can carry, the brothers hijack an ambulance as their escape route. This leads them to take paramedic Cam Thompson hostage, along with a wounded police officer named Zach, who was accidentally shot during the robbery. They’re all then caught up in a high-speed chase.

Michael Bay was originally going to direct the film, but he and the producers had different visions for the project, so he left. Bay had previously worked with Will Smith on the 1995 movie Bad Boys. Netflix announced in September that John Swab will take over as director. This will be Swab’s biggest directing opportunity yet, following his work on films like Body Brokers, Ida Red, Little Dixie, One Day as a Lion, and Long Gone Heroes.
