How Long Does It Take For The Scarecrow And Tin Man To Get Into Makeup In Wicked: For Good?

Spoiler alert for Wicked: For Good. If you haven’t seen the sequel beware!

After a year of anticipation, the movie Wicked: For Good is finally in theaters and is already a huge success! The film adapts the second half of the Wicked story and includes exciting links to The Wizard of Oz (available to stream with a subscription to Max). Specifically, the movie features The Scarecrow and The Tin Man, and we’ve just learned how long it took the actors to transform with makeup and prosthetics to play those iconic characters.

Before the movie For Good came out, Ethan Slater shared a picture of himself wearing the makeup he used to play Tin Man. Jonathan Bailey was more private, and didn’t talk about his change from Fiyero to The Scarecrow until after the film was released. Makeup artist Frances Hannon recently told Us Weekly how much work went into creating the iconic looks for these characters.

Honestly, getting ready for the role took ages – four hours, to be exact! Between the hair, wigs, all the straw details, plus the prosthetics and even special hands, it was a whole process. Then came the costume on top of everything. But you know what? It was incredibly moving. I really think all that effort adds something truly special to the film, especially to ‘Wicked: For Good’.

Wow, it took four hours of makeup to transform the actors into the Scarecrow and Tin Man – they didn’t use special effects! But it was worth it; both characters look fantastic in Wicked: For Good and really add to what makes Jon M. Chu’s sequel so special.

Getting ready for the musical Wicked took a significant amount of makeup time for Slater and Bailey, but it wasn’t the longest process ever. For instance, Jacob Elordi spent a full 10 hours in makeup for Frankenstein, and Alan Cumming needed over four hours to get prepared for his role in X-Men 2.

During the same interview, Hannon explained that the extensive makeup process actually aided Ethan Slater and Jonathan Bailey in getting into character. She said:

The changes were incredible, and the design was truly stunning – Ethan and Jonathan were deeply impressed. Seeing the visuals really makes a difference. What’s so impressive is that everything was done with practical effects, yet it looks seamless and massive on the IMAX screen. You’d never know it wasn’t all real – it’s flawless.

She makes a good point. Both of these styles are really eye-catching, and the traditional makeup helped the Wizard of Oz characters look authentic, avoiding the unnatural look that can sometimes happen with digital effects. However, the attempt to make Jeff Goldblum look younger in the flashback scene didn’t quite succeed.
