A sneak peek at the trailer for DC’s upcoming series, Lanterns, has revealed an unexpected development for the character Hal Jordan. Though James Gunn’s DC Universe has already introduced a Green Lantern – Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion in Superman – Fillion won’t be the main character when the Green Lantern series arrives. He will reprise his role, but the show will focus on a different Lantern.
I’m really excited about the cast of HBO’s Lanterns! Aaron Pierre is taking on the role of John Stewart, and Kyle Chandler, who I’ve always loved, is going to be Hal Jordan. From what I’ve heard, the show is aiming for a similar, gritty feel as True Detective, with Hal Jordan investigating a big mystery here on Earth, and John Stewart learning the ropes alongside him. We’re getting more and more details now, and it’s sounding fantastic!
The first trailer for DC’s upcoming series, Lanterns, was shown at an HBO Max event in São Paulo, Brazil, on November 25th, according to Omelete. Although the trailer hasn’t been released online, Omelete described the footage: Hal and John Stewart have been training together for months, and Jordan is currently acting as a substitute teacher, though it’s unclear who he’s filling in for.

The initial trailer for the new Green Lantern TV show doesn’t show off the classic superhero costumes for John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Instead, it highlights the show’s Western-inspired setting, featuring American countryside locations and a generally muted, brown color scheme. We do get a quick glimpse of Hal Jordan flying in the teaser, and there’s a mention of a squirrel Green Lantern, likely Ch’p.
The show also focuses on the relationship between the two main Green Lanterns. John Stewart and Hal Jordan get into an argument, with Stewart claiming he’s better at rescuing people. Before seeing the footage, fans expected Jordan to be Stewart’s mentor, which he is, but it’s unexpected that he’s actually stepping in for another Green Lantern.
Originally expected in early 2026, the premiere of the new Green Lantern series, Lanterns, has been moved to late summer of 2026. This announcement came from HBO executive Casey Bloys during a recent promotional event in New York City. As a result of the delayed release, the trailer may also be released later than anticipated.
I was listening to James Gunn talk about the Lanterns trailer the other day, and honestly, he doesn’t seem to know when we’ll actually see the trailer for the Green Lantern show. He explained that HBO’s marketing approach is just different from how they do things with movies. Luckily, he says the trailer’s description should hold fans over until the footage finally drops. It’s a bit frustrating not knowing a release date, but at least they’re trying to keep the hype alive!
