Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard responded to recent talk about their relationship by sharing a funny story about their chaotic holiday decorating adventures.
Dax and his wife shared a scary story on Jimmy Kimmel Live about their friend almost falling off their roof while putting up Christmas lights. It could have been a serious injury!
After receiving a surprisingly high $17,000 estimate to hang their holiday decorations, they decided to ask a friend of Dax’s for a more affordable option.
Jimmy mentioned a neighbor told him the couple had put up their decorations before Thanksgiving, but Dax explained they actually decorated the day after Thanksgiving.
When the host asked Dax if he puts up his own holiday lights and decorations, he sheepishly admitted he used to, but explained that his wife’s financial success now means he doesn’t anymore.
Okay, so I was chatting with this couple, and they were getting a little heat online because of a playful post Kristen made about Dax’s funny promise never to harm her. Anyway, they’re really into decorating – like, really into it! They had these amazing ideas for their Nashville home, but when they got a quote for $17,000 to have professionals handle it, they just couldn’t believe the price. They felt it was way too much money, so they decided to get creative and DIY it instead!

Jimmy chimed in, saying it’s surprisingly expensive when you don’t handle things yourself – almost like you’re being penalized for it. He jokingly compared it to getting punished by Santa Claus.
Dax added, ‘It’s as if they’re gonna make a bronze bust of someone in your front yard.’
Instead of hiring professionals, the couple asked Dax’s best friend to decorate, and they planned to fly him in from Detroit to do the job.
Dax explained that instead of paying the quoted $17,000, he offered his friend, a former roofer with 25 years of experience, only $3,000 to do the work.
Dax thought it would be a great opportunity for his friend, but then pointed out his friend hadn’t been on a roof for almost twenty years, which made things more difficult.
Jimmy pointed out to the amused audience that this person was his closest friend, yet he was being paid less than a fifth of what the job was actually worth.
Dax was concerned his friend might fall off the roof, so he called him to share his worries before leaving on his trip.
The podcaster’s friend tried to calm him by mentioning that he would brings ropes along for safety.

Dax remembered telling him, ‘I never want to be the one giving your eulogy, saying something like, “People might say I saved your life by getting you into treatment, but I definitely killed you by making you put up Christmas lights at my house.”‘
Jimmy added that it would have been because he was ‘too cheap.’
Dax surprised everyone when he admitted his friend had fallen from the roof, but thankfully, safety ropes Dax had prepared caught him just in time.
Dax mentioned the rescue happened just before he lost his balance and fell, and Kristen compared it to a scene from ‘Mission: Impossible’.
Fortunately, our contractor happened to be there and took pictures of everything, so we have wonderful photos of Aaron putting up the lights. We’ll be reminded of his enthusiasm every Christmas as we enjoy them – he really went all out!
Kristen mentioned that Dax’s friend exceeded all expectations, and the house now looks incredibly vibrant and colorful, almost as if it’s ablaze with color.
The couple playfully suggested the lights might stay up forever, considering all the work they put into hanging them.
Dax and Kristen played a thankful-sharing game with Jimmy, taking turns naming things they appreciated.

The game finished with Kristen jokingly repeating something Dax had expressed gratitude for – ‘nicotine’ – despite Jimmy pointing out it didn’t break any rules.
This amusing situation follows a recent controversy where Kristen jokingly recalled a past promise from Dax not to harm her, a story she shared while they were celebrating their anniversary.
Actor Jason Segel, known for ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall,’ shared a humorous and heartfelt anniversary message to his wife. He quoted a past conversation, saying, ‘My husband once told me he’d never hurt me, joking that even though he had plenty of reasons to, he wouldn’t—because so many men have tragically harmed their wives.’ He accompanied the message with a heart emoji.
The post received overwhelmingly negative reactions on social media, with many people calling it deeply insensitive and upsetting.
Kristen was taken to task by domestic violence survivors and their advocates in particular.
Since that initial post went viral, even more concerning things have surfaced. People started remembering other times Dax made jokes about hurting his wife, and unfortunately, the Daily Mail also shared some really troubling details about what their marriage was actually like, according to sources close to them. It’s a really difficult situation, and it’s brought a lot of attention to the issues they were dealing with behind closed doors.
