Yellowstone spinoff with Luke Grimes reveals surprise return of cast regulars from hit Kevin Costner show

The first full-length trailer of a new Yellowstone spinoff was shared on Monday on social media.

A sneak peek has been released for ‘Y: Marshals,’ a new show starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. The series follows a highly skilled team of US Marshals in Montana as they tackle dangerous criminals, including gang members and cartel operatives, and even face off against wildlife like grizzly bears. It’s scheduled to premiere in March 2026.

The video features several actors from the original Yellowstone series, which starred Kevin Costner.

Gil Birmingham plays Thomas Rainwater, the chief of the Broken Rock Reservation. He tells Kayce that the Dutton family members are all naturally violent, but Kayce is unique because he’s a protector at heart.

We then see Brecken Merrill, now 17, playing Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son. He appears noticeably older in his current scenes compared to his previous appearances on Yellowstone.

The show has also promised to bring back Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, according to Deadline.

Kelsey Asbille, who plays Kayce’s wife Monica Dutton, was not featured in recent sightings. It’s currently unclear whether she will return for future seasons of Yellowstone.

Ash Santos, known for American Horror Story, Tatanka Means from Killers of the Flower Moon, and Arielle Kebbel, who starred in The Vampire Diaries, have also joined the cast.

These actors will be joining the show as main characters, portraying Kayce’s colleagues – Andrea, Miles, and Belle – who are all U.S. Marshals.

Brett Cullen, known for playing Thomas Wayne in the movie Joker, will appear in multiple episodes as Harry Gifford, the regional head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.

I’m so excited about the new season of ‘Yellowstone’! They’ve cast Logan Marshall-Green – you might recognize him from ‘Prometheus’ – as Pete Calvin, a friend of Kayce’s from their time in the military. He’s a fantastic actor and I think he’ll bring a lot to the show.

The show focuses on Kayce as he tries to establish a fair and effective form of justice in Montana. He and his team struggle to juggle their personal family lives with their responsibilities, all while dealing with the emotional toll of being the last protectors against rising violence in the area.

Luke played a major role in the popular series Yellowstone, appearing as Kayce Dutton, a member of the ranching family at the heart of the show, throughout all five seasons.

Kevin departed the series midway through its fifth season, leading to his character, John, being written out of the show with a storyline involving a planned murder.

While rumors circulated about a disagreement with Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner ultimately left the show because making his four-part Western film, Horizon – which he directed, starred in, and co-wrote – required his full attention.

Horizon, a film Kevin has been working on for decades and personally funded with over $38 million, released its first installment last year, but it didn’t perform well at the box office.

In 2024, Yellowstone finished airing season five, which received mixed reactions from viewers. Soon after, Luke Grimes shared some insights about Kevin Costner’s departure in an interview.

Luke explained to Men’s Health that John Dutton’s death felt necessary. He also admitted that with Kevin Costner’s departure, some of the show’s inherent conflict had also disappeared.

He admitted the situation wasn’t ideal and made things difficult, but surprisingly, it ended up being the smoothest season they’d ever filmed. He didn’t want to blame anyone specifically.

Oh my gosh, Luke just said the most adorable thing! He admitted he hasn’t talked to Kevin since he left the show, but he was quick to say it’s not drama or anything! He just… he’s Kevin Costner, you know? Like, a huge star! It’s so sweet that Luke gets it – he’s just acknowledging Kevin’s level of fame! I totally understand, honestly. It’s not a falling out, just… Kevin Costner being Kevin Costner!

He explained that he has the person’s phone number, but doesn’t want to be the one to initiate contact. He said the other person is welcome to contact him directly if they wish.

The Daily Mail obtained video of Kevin dismissing questions about a possible falling out with Luke, but he did admit the two haven’t talked since the show’s finale.
