Morgan Freeman Gets Real About Still Working At 88: ‘Sometimes The Idea Of Retirement Would Float Past Me, But…’

Morgan Freeman is a remarkably talented actor with a long and successful career. Even at 88 years old, he’s known for a diverse range of films, including classics like The Shawshank Redemption, blockbusters like Batman Begins, and even animated hits like The LEGO Movie. While he’s more than earned the chance to retire, he doesn’t seem to have any plans to stop acting just yet.

Morgan Freeman recently told The Guardian he occasionally thinks about retirement. But he quickly forgets about it whenever he’s presented with an interesting new acting opportunity. He doesn’t accept every role offered, but some projects are simply too appealing to decline, he explained.

I’d occasionally think about retiring, but as soon as my agent mentioned a potential job – someone wanting to hire me or making an offer – all those thoughts would disappear. I’d immediately start focusing on the practical details again, like salary and location.

The actor approaches television and movie roles the same way. He recently appeared in the Paramount+ series Lioness and the new movie Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which is the third installment in the Now You See Me franchise.

Most careers have a natural retirement age, as physical demands or changing skills eventually make it hard to continue. But acting is different – as actors age, the types of parts they’re offered simply change. Hollywood actually needs veteran actors to keep working, because there’s always a demand for experienced performers to play older characters.

Many actors, particularly those who have achieved success and financial security, gradually reduce their work commitments rather than stopping completely. They might work less often, but will still consider roles that genuinely appeal to them. Even famously retired actor Daniel Day-Lewis recently returned to acting to work with his son, and has suggested he’d be open to future projects under the right circumstances.

Some actors have no plans to retire – Samuel L. Jackson intends to work as long as he can, and Nicolas Cage loves acting too much to stop. Others, like Cate Blanchett, do plan to retire eventually to pursue other interests, though she hasn’t said when that might be.

Although Morgan Freeman isn’t thinking about retirement right now, he acknowledges it could happen someday. He says his enthusiasm isn’t quite what it used to be, but he still enjoys acting enough to continue. He went on to say…
