Eric Dane’s recent role on Brilliant Minds was particularly moving. He played a brave firefighter fighting ALS, a disease he himself is battling, adding a deeply personal layer to the performance.
On Monday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, 53-year-old actor [actor’s name], who shared his own difficult diagnosis in April, portrayed Matthew, a firefighter battling ALS. The storyline focused on Matthew’s struggle to tell his adult daughter and former wife about his illness.
Viewers were deeply moved by the latest episode, with many praising the actor’s emotional and impactful performance as Dane.
When Matthew’s breathing became more difficult, Dr. Wolf (Zachary Quinto) advised him to reach out to his loved ones for help. However, Matthew didn’t want to burden them and even considered cancelling Thanksgiving to avoid causing them worry.
I could tell he really didn’t want to consider a voice-banking app. It was hard for him – and honestly, heartbreaking for me to watch – because he just couldn’t picture a time when he wouldn’t be able to speak for himself. The thought of losing his voice was something he deeply resisted.
The final scene of the episode, where Matthew recorded a deeply emotional voice message, was so powerful that it prompted the entire crew to give the actor a ten-minute standing ovation, as shared by showrunner Michael Grassi.

After further sessions with Wolf and the interns, Matthew began to open up.
He shared the news of his ALS diagnosis with family during Thanksgiving, and his colleagues from the New York Fire Department showed him tremendous support.
Following the broadcast, many viewers shared their reactions on social media, with one fan tweeting that Eric Dane was making them feel heartbroken.
‘Crying with eric dane in this series,’ another added.
Another fan praised him for doing a ‘Beautiful job.’
Dane returned to medical dramas by collaborating with Grassi on an episode that realistically portrays the challenges families experience when someone is diagnosed with ALS.
‘There’s no right or wrong way, there’s no rulebook on how to do it,’ Grassi told NBC Insider.
For the Thanksgiving episode, we wanted to explore a family dealing with a difficult situation – something many people can relate to.

We really admire this person – a firefighter who’s spent his life helping others and serving the community. It’s completely central to who he is.
It’s difficult for someone like Matthew to need help later in life, especially after he’s always been the one helping others. He’s always struggled to accept assistance, and it’s something he’s dealt with his whole life. He’s a very stubborn person, but that’s actually one of the things I admire about him.
Instead of ending with Wolf’s typical closing thoughts, this episode concluded with a deeply emotional message from Matthew.
Matthew explained that while people often associate rescue with heroism, he’s always seen it simply as an act of kindness. He admitted he never considered needing care himself, but now realizes that both his partner and her mother will always be there for him, especially when things get tough.
He explained that true heroism isn’t always about dramatic acts. Often, it’s found in the smaller, more personal struggles – like admitting you need help. For him, accepting support from his daughter and mother was surprisingly difficult, but ultimately a courageous step.
He finished, tears welling up, saying that this was the most courageous thing he’d ever attempted, and it terrified him. However, he believed it was worth the fear if it meant he could spend more time with the person he was speaking to.
Grassi shared with NBC Insider that the scene was incredibly touching, and Eric delivered a beautifully vulnerable performance.
Once filming finished on that scene, the whole crew gave Matthew a ten-minute standing ovation. Everyone was deeply touched by his amazing performance, making it a truly memorable day.

As well as his appearance on the NBC show, he is ploughing ahead with a third season of Euphoria.
In October, Dane seemed to have difficulty speaking when a photographer at the Washington, D.C. airport asked him what message he had for fans concerned about his well-being.
Dane replied softly, ‘Keep the faith, man.’
Oh my gosh, I just heard the most heartbreaking thing! People who are really close to him – like, seriously in the know – are saying he’s been thinking a lot about… well, about not being around forever. It’s just so sad to think about, but apparently he’s been really confronting his own mortality. I’m so worried about him!
According to a source, Eric is currently facing the difficult reality of his own mortality, something most people avoid thinking about.
He’s aware of what’s coming and is focusing on making the most of his time. He wants to inspire others facing difficulties and find joy in connecting with loved ones – truly living in the present.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a rare and currently incurable disease that impacts nerve cells and affects about 5,000 people in the United States annually. It’s also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Symptoms often progress rapidly and are difficult to detect in the early stages.
In early 2024, Dane began experiencing weakness in his right hand, initially thinking it was just from overuse, like texting too much or general tiredness.
He finally got a clear diagnosis in April after a long period of tests and appointments with various doctors.
By June, he had lost use of his right arm.
Most people with ALS live three to five years after diagnosis, but Dane’s health has deteriorated quickly and he is in a lot of pain.

Throughout everything, his ex-wife and close friend, actress Rebecca Gayheart from Beverly Hills, 90210, has been a constant source of strength for him.
Their relationship started in 2003. Joely Gayheart, recently out of a long-term relationship with producer Brett Ratner and known for her role on Nip/Tuck, met Patrick Dane, who was building his acting career with smaller parts in shows like Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and Roseanne.
They shares two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
By 2018, his 14-year marriage to Gayheart had ended, and she filed for divorce.
After Dane was diagnosed with ALS, Gayheart is said to have stopped pursuing the divorce and decided to support him instead.
She told E! News, the day before his public statement, that they’ve remained close friends and excellent co-parents. They’ve found a way to successfully maintain a family dynamic, which she believes is benefiting both their children and themselves.
