Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek looks healthy in new social media video as his wife gushes ‘he’s bouncing back’ amid cancer battle

James Van Der Beek, known for his role on Dawson’s Creek, appeared to be doing well in a recent social media video. His wife shared that he’s recovering strongly as he continues to fight cancer.

The 48-year-old actor, who revealed he had stage 3 colorectal cancer last year, is best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the popular teen drama that ran from 1998 to 2003.

James, a father of six, is once again selling items from his popular 1999 film, Varsity Blues. He’s doing this to cover the costs of his own cancer treatment, as well as help other patients with theirs.

The movie, a coming-of-age story centered around high school football, featured James in the lead role as Jonathan ‘Mox’ Moxon, alongside Jon Voight, Paul Walker, and Scott Caan.

Oh my gosh, you guys, he just looked so good in that new video! Seriously, happy and healthy, it was amazing. And he was showing off this incredible white shirt – it had his number, 4, and his last name, Moxon, on it. But it’s not just a cool shirt, it’s for a really good cause! He’s using it to raise money, and I immediately wanted like, five of them! I need to support him in every way possible!

As so many of you requested, here’s my favorite jersey! I have great memories of the exciting plays we made during away games, but I especially loved wearing the classic white varsity uniform.

His wife, Kimberly, playfully commented, ‘You’re amazing! Great to see you recovering!’ They are parents to six children.

He sold similar merchandise from the film last year soon after he revealed his diagnosis.

This news follows last week’s announcement that he’s auctioning off memorabilia from his time on Dawson’s Creek to help cover the costs of his cancer treatment, which he described as ‘expensive’.

He said he was sad to let go of the things he was selling, but recent surprises in his life made it feel like the right decision.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about the upcoming auction! They’re offering pieces from the show, and I’ve read that the outfit he wore in the very first episode could go for as much as $4,000 – according to People magazine, anyway. I’m definitely going to be bidding!

A necklace Dawson gave to Joey Potter for prom – worn by Katie Holmes – will also be auctioned, and is expected to fetch between $26,400 and $52,800.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the U.S. among men and women combined. 

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2025, around 154,000 Americans will receive a diagnosis of colon or rectal cancer, and sadly, about 53,000 will die from it.

James revealed his diagnosis in November 2024.

Fans recently became worried about his health after he appeared very thin during a virtual reunion of the TV show Dawson’s Creek.

He was initially due to appear in person but had to cancel due to ill health. 

Back in November 2024, Van Der Beek spoke about his diagnosis and said he was feeling good. 

‘Miracles do happen, and they happen all the time,’ he told People at the time. 

‘It’s scary at the onset. It’s overwhelming. Go easy on yourself. You got this.’ 

He shared how grateful he is for his wife and children, saying he feels fortunate to have so much to look forward to and that life is good.

The stars of Dawson’s Creek got back together at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York City to perform a live reading of the first episode of their show, partnering with the charity F Cancer.

Unfortunately, the event’s lead actor, James, had to cancel his appearance because he became unwell while receiving treatment for colorectal cancer.

Instead of appearing alone, James was surprised on stage by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. He had pre-recorded videos that were played throughout the show.

As a lifestyle expert, I always say it’s the people around you who truly make things special! I recently spent an evening with some amazing women – Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Busy Philipps – and felt so grateful for their support. It was lovely to connect with them, especially since I was missing my husband that night. It just goes to show, leaning on your community can make all the difference!

‘But the support and the love has been healing to the core.’

Katie, who played James’ on-screen girlfriend Joey Potter, also reminisced about that night, sharing how much she valued her close relationship with her fellow actors.

The actress shared a video of herself with Michelle and Joshua Jackson, writing that she could never fully express how much they mean to her and how strong their connection is after everything they’ve shared together.

To James, Josh, and Michelle—we love you, and have since April 1997. James, we believe in you and are here for you. We’re so grateful to everyone who has supported James and his family, both then and now, and thank you for all your support, especially last night.

James replied to the post, commenting: ‘Love you! Thank you for being you.’

Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for Hamilton, stepped in at the last minute to read through the script. This happened after a request from his friends, Michelle and her husband Thomas Kail.

The celebrated Broadway star posted his own pictures from the event, including photos with James’s family. He expressed how honored he was to be there and shared that he’d been sending James encouraging photos throughout rehearsals and the performance itself.

Lin-Manuel explained that James unfortunately couldn’t come to New York for the Dawson’s Creek reunion on Monday because he was sick with a virus. Thomas Kail let him know over the weekend.

Since I’m now a godfather to Tommy and Michelle’s child, covering Dawson’s shift at the last minute is just part of what I normally do.

What happened next felt like something out of a science fiction show; it was a real honor to step in and help keep the love for James, his family, and this amazing show alive for audiences at the Rodgers Theatre and around the world.
