As a lifelong fan, I’m so excited to hear the BBC is bringing back Grange Hill! It’s been 17 years since we last saw what was happening at the school, and I can’t wait to see a new generation experience the drama and fun.
The popular school drama, which aired from 1978 to 2008, is being updated for modern audiences. While it will bring back memories for fans, the new version will likely have a very different style and focus on the issues children face today.
The original show included memorable characters like Peter ‘Tucker’ Jenkins, played by Todd Carty from EastEnders. His famous catchphrase, ‘flippin’ ‘eck,’ was so popular it led to a spin-off series called Tucker’s Luck.
The show, previously popular with millions, has always addressed important issues like AIDS and drug abuse. The new version currently in development is being updated to connect with modern audiences.
According to a source close to the show, ‘Grange Hill’ is now seen as a product of its time because of the issues it addressed.
However, they believe there’s still a lot of potential to update it with relevant themes for today’s young people, like discussions about transgender issues and online harassment.

Things have changed a lot since Grange Hill originally aired, so the show will probably seem quite different now.
A reboot will probably disappoint longtime fans hoping for a familiar experience. It’s likely to have a very different look and feel than the original.
Phil Redmond created the television show Grange Hill, and later went on to write the popular Channel 4 soaps Brookside and Hollyoaks.
The cast also featured Alan Humphries, played by George Armstrong, Benny Green (played by the late Terry Sue-Patt), Suzanne Ross (who later starred in EastEnders, played by Susan Tully), Steven Banks (played by Tim Polley), and Sammy McGuire, known as ‘Zammo’ (played by Lee MacDonald).
Daily Mail have contacted the BBC for comment.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the story of actor Lee MacDonald, who played Zammo in the classic series. He recently shared on Good Morning Britain that he was really shaken up by a recent health scare – a cancer scare, to be exact – and it was incredibly moving to hear him talk about it. It really puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?
The actor, known for playing the popular character on the BBC show from 1982 to 1987, recently shared a surprisingly common symptom he experienced and cautioned fans not to ignore it.
The NHS explains that melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that can spread. However, non-melanoma skin cancer is more frequent and generally not as dangerous.

Talking on GMB, Lee said: ‘I had a scare a year ago, which was found to be non-cancerous.
O2 is currently running a campaign to raise awareness about skin cancer, which prompted me to see a doctor about a small rash on my cheek. It turned out to be a keratosis, a patch of skin that could potentially become cancerous.
‘So I’m going to have to get it burnt out.’
He added: ‘It could turn cancerous. It was just off the back of going and getting it checked out.
It’s important to focus on taking care of your skin and paying attention to any spots or imperfections you notice. If you see anything concerning, please get it checked by a doctor.
Susanna Reid mentioned that the celebrity is personally aware of the dangers of skin cancer, as his father had it.
Lee recalled that his father, a driver, used to rest his arm out the car window for long periods. His mother would frequently warn him that his arm was getting sunburned.
‘Later in life he had skin cancer cut out from that arm.’
As a longtime fan, it was really upsetting to hear Richard Madeley mention that Lee used to use sunbeds years ago. It seems like Richard believes that might have played a part in his health issues, and honestly, it just adds to how heartbreaking the whole situation is.
Lee explained that before he used to go to nightclubs, he’d spend about an hour each week tanning. He did this every Tuesday and Thursday from the age of 17 until he was around 26.
‘That’s what the doctor said it is.
You know, I’m actually more likely to have gotten a tan from sunbeds than from actually being in the sun. I’m pretty careful about sun exposure – I’m very aware of the risks, so I don’t spend a lot of time outdoors.

The actor shared that he and his son go fishing every Sunday, and he always remembers to wear sunscreen.
Richard asked: ‘Even if it’s cloudy?’
Lee said his stepmother scolded him because he got sunburned, even though it wasn’t a particularly sunny day.
‘But the rays were coming through! So cover up at all times.’
This announcement follows Lee’s disclosure in June 2024 on X, formerly Twitter, that they had been diagnosed with skin cancer.
He said: ‘Went to the doctors today to check an unusual spot on my face! Doctor says it’s cancer!
As we get older, please pay attention to any new or concerning changes and see a doctor about them promptly. I’ve scheduled an appointment to address this in the next few days.
