Thanos is the main villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and surprisingly, the franchise plans to bring him back in 2026. This will likely cause major problems for one of the MCU heroes. Thanos famously caused widespread destruction in the films Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Thanos was ultimately defeated and removed from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though Robert Downey Jr. is taking on the role of Doctor Doom in future Avengers films, Thanos will likely reappear in a significant, but short, capacity in 2026. This upcoming appearance will tie into a hero Thanos previously killed.
Thanos Returns In A 2026 MCU TV Show

Thanos will be back in a new Marvel TV show called Vision Quest. The series, coming to Disney+, will continue the story of White Vision after the events of WandaVision. It will also feature other Marvel artificial intelligences like Ultron and JARVIS. Plus, one of Scarlet Witch and Vision’s sons, Tommy Maximoff (also known as Speed), will be played by Ruaridh Mollica in the series.
During New York Comic Con, Marvel revealed the first trailer for Vision Quest. A particularly striking moment showed White Vision watching footage of Thanos killing the original Vision in Avengers: Infinity War. This suggests Vision will be forced to experience his own death again, including Thanos removing the Mind Stone.
Currently, it’s unclear if Thanos will have a significant role in Vision Quest beyond a quick appearance in a flashback. Even if he doesn’t, he could still reappear in the next two Avengers films. This is because Doctor Doom famously kills Thanos in the Secret Wars storyline, leaving the door open for his return.
Thanos’ MCU Return Will Reopen Vision’s Traumatic Past

When it comes to Vision, Thanos’ planned return in the 2026 MCU film is a great fit. Vision has experienced a lot of hardship throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A particularly painful moment was his death in Avengers: Infinity War – he was tragically killed by Wanda Maximoff, the person he loved, to prevent Thanos from getting the Mind Stone.
Ultimately, it didn’t matter, because Thanos simply reversed time and killed Vision once more. This forces White Vision to experience his most painful memories all over again, raising questions about how that will affect a being struggling to come to terms with his changed self and past. This creates a strong foundation for the story, and Thanos’s involvement doesn’t seem to have any real impact on the main character of Vision Quest.
