Benedict Cumberbatch is teasing Doctor Strange’s MCU future.
Benedict Cumberbatch has been playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first Doctor Strange film in 2016. Since then, he’s appeared as the character in several other popular movies, including Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). He’s also provided the voice for different versions of Doctor Strange in the animated series, What If…?
What did Benedict Cumberbatch say about Doctor Strange’s MCU future?
In a recent interview with Collider, Benedict Cumberbatch shared that he has a clearer idea of Doctor Strange’s future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe than he used to. He also confirmed that fans will absolutely see the character return in future projects.
During an interview with the SmartLess podcast, as reported by ComicBookMovie, Benedict Cumberbatch hinted that Doctor Strange could appear in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. He playfully suggested this by mentioning he has “other huge commitments involving cloaks” planned for the next year.
Cumberbatch might have been talking about reshoots for Avengers: Doomsday planned for 2026, but it’s more likely he meant Avengers: Secret Wars. That film is scheduled to start shooting next summer and would require a significant time commitment.
Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced whether Benedict Cumberbatch will be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars movies. However, many fans believe his character, Doctor Strange, will appear, particularly because of Strange’s important role in the ‘Secret Wars’ comic books. Currently, details about the plots of both films are still being kept secret.
The next Avengers movie, Doomsday, is scheduled to hit US theaters on December 18, 2026, as part of the sixth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Secret Wars, another Avengers film, will follow a year later on December 17, 2027.
