Jake Gyllenhaal’s Ambulance: From Box Office Flop To Netflix Hit

Jake Gyllenhaal’s action thriller, Ambulance, didn’t do well in theaters, but it’s now gaining popularity on Netflix. Gyllenhaal has had a long and successful career with roles in many popular films, including City Slickers, October Sky, Brokeback Mountain, The Day After Tomorrow, Nightcrawler, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. It’s not unusual for even established stars to have projects that don’t quite hit it out of the park.

Despite not performing well in theaters when it was released in 2022, the action movie Ambulance, directed by Michael Bay, is now popular on streaming services. As of November 24, 2025, it’s the third most-watched movie on Netflix in the U.S., behind Champagne Problems and The Carman Family Deaths.

Currently rounding out the top 10 movies on Netflix are In Your Dreams, Train Dreams, K-Pop Demon Hunters, The Sandlot, Frankenstein, Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, and Mistletoe Mixup.

As of November 24th, the most popular shows on Netflix are: The Beast in Me, A Man on the Inside, Absentia, Stranger Things, Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs, The Great British Baking Show: Holidays, One Shot with Ed Sheeran: A Music Experience, Homeland, Last Samurai Standing, and Jurassic World: Chaos Theory.

The action thriller Ambulance features Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as adopted brothers who rob a bank and then find themselves on the run in a stolen ambulance. Eiza González and Jackson White also star in the film.

The 2022 film featured major stars, including actor Jake Gyllenhaal and director Michael Bay. Bay is famous for directing blockbuster movies such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, and Transformers.

Despite featuring stars like Gyllenhaal, the action thriller Ambulance wasn’t a box office success when it came out in March 2022, earning only $52.3 million with a $40 million budget. Critics gave the film generally positive, though somewhat mixed, reviews, giving it a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Viewers generally liked the movie, giving it an 87% approval rating. However, that positive feedback didn’t translate into many ticket sales, preventing it from becoming a box office success.

Despite initially performing poorly in theaters, the movie Ambulance is now gaining popularity. In August 2024, it climbed to the No. 9 spot on Netflix’s worldwide streaming list, attracting 4.1 million viewers.

The movie Ambulance has climbed to the No. 3 spot in the US. While the disappointing box office numbers of 2022 were likely due to factors like the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming services such as Netflix have given unsuccessful films a chance to reach new viewers who preferred watching at home instead of going to theaters.

Jake Gyllenhaal has several films coming out in the next few years, including The Bride!, Remain, In the Grey, and Road House 2. Whether these movies will be successful like Ambulance or become instant audience favorites remains to be seen.
