Rewatching The Fantastic Four: First Steps Reveals Galactus’ Harshest Reality

I really enjoy The Fantastic Four: First Steps, especially as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga. However, after watching it again on Disney+, I think the movie doesn’t quite get Galactus right in a few ways. I was thrilled with Ralph Ineson’s performance as Galactus and how Marvel finally made the character look like he does in the comics, but there’s still room for improvement.

After years of hoping, the recent Marvel movie’s portrayal of Galactus – as a humanoid being, unlike the cloud-like version in the early 2000s Fantastic Four films – finally delivered what I’d been waiting for. However, even this version of Galactus isn’t perfect. While the movie is still enjoyable, there’s room for improvement.

Galactus Could Have Been Better In The MCU Fantastic Four Movie

The first time the Fantastic Four encounter Galactus on his ship, you immediately understand just how massive and powerful he is. He’s incredibly intimidating, and it’s hard to imagine how they could possibly win against him. Also, while discussing Franklin Richards – Reed and Sue’s incredibly powerful son – Galactus reveals that he himself wields the Power Cosmic.

At the climax of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the movie delivers a large-scale battle between the Fantastic Four and Galactus. However, both my initial viewing in theaters and a recent rewatch on Disney+ confirmed my feeling that Galactus is defeated far too quickly and easily by the team.

After Sue Storm secured the Devourer of Worlds, she propelled it through several structures, ultimately allowing the Silver Surfer to deliver the final push into the portal. While Galactus appeared massive, his powers weren’t really showcased in the film. I had hoped to see more than just him being physically moved around New York City.

How The MCU Can Still Do Right By Galactus After The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Fortunately, Marvel Studios didn’t kill off Galactus when he first appeared in the MCU. Instead, the Fantastic Four simply sent him to another part of the universe. This means we could see both Galactus, played by Ineson, and Silver Surfer, played by Julia Garner, return in future Marvel movies, potentially a sequel to the Fantastic Four film.

When Galactus returns, he’ll likely be furious about how the Fantastic Four treated him. This could be the catalyst for him to unleash his full potential in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” didn’t showcase all of his abilities, there’s still a chance for the MCU to explore them further.
