This show, a modern favorite that originally aired on TNT from 2014 to 2018, follows Captain Tom Chandler, played by Eric Dane, and his crew as they navigate a world devastated by a global pandemic that has wiped out most of the population. They’re on a naval destroyer and face incredible challenges.

As a big fan of action and sci-fi, I really got into The Last Ship. It ran for five seasons, a total of 56 episodes, and honestly, it’s one of those shows that really finds its footing as it goes along. The later seasons are definitely stronger than the first. If you’re looking for a post-apocalyptic thrill ride, I think you’ll enjoy it – it’s currently available on HBO Max and worth checking out this week.

Big Love

HBO’s Big Love is a well-regarded drama series that, despite its critical success, hasn’t always gotten the attention it deserves. The show ran for five seasons, with 53 episodes airing from 2006 to 2011, and starred Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny, Amanda Seyfried, and other talented actors.

The show centers around a man in Utah who practices polygamy and owns a chain of home improvement stores. He’s navigating the challenges of marriage to three wives and working hard to keep his unusual family life private. The third season received critical acclaim, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being nominated for 9 Emmy Awards.

Perry Mason

If you enjoyed Matthew Rhys’s performances in popular shows like Netflix’s The Beast in Me or the Emmy-winning series The Americans, you’ll definitely want to check out his role in HBO’s Perry Mason.

Perry Mason is a fresh take on the popular 1957 show, originally starring Raymond Burr. This recent version, which ran for two seasons (2020-2023), received very positive reviews, earning an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake

House Of The Dragon

The world of Game of Thrones is expanding! A new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is coming in January 2026. And while we wait, fans can still enjoy House of the Dragon on HBO Max, with the premiere of its third season also planned for next year.

With scores of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.3 on IMDb, House of the Dragon is a hit. This Game of Thrones prequel is set 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s birth and is currently one of the best fantasy series available on HBO Max, making it a great choice for a weekend binge.
