Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet are the stars of a new horror film called The Dark Domain. The movie takes advantage of the fact that these classic Disney characters are now in the public domain – meaning anyone can use them without permission or fees. It’s a twisted take on the beloved duo, promising the scares and thrills that horror fans love. BritFlicks released a trailer on YouTube, and the description hints at what viewers can expect.
This unique collaboration takes the original Mickey Mouse from ‘Steamboat Willie’ and the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh and transforms them into terrifying, monstrous creatures lurking within a dark and dangerous forest called Hell Forest.
Givanni Gotay stars as Dark Winnie and Daniel Wilkinson plays Dark Mickey in the new production. Frayna Sanchez, Chris Boudreaux, and Rachel Carter – who also wrote the script – round out the cast. The project is directed by Glenn Douglas Packard, known primarily for his work with music videos, and he’s aiming to create a fresh, innovative style, which he’s calling The Dark Domain.
We’re crafting a truly terrifying horror experience by focusing on classic techniques – using real, physical effects and a deeply unsettling atmosphere – to reimagine familiar characters in a much more disturbing way.
The trailer for the upcoming horror film featuring Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh is full of unsettling images, hinting at what’s at stake and who might be in danger. It also shows off the special effects used to create the film’s twisted take on these classic Disney characters. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date, but the filmmakers are aiming for 2026. The story of The Dark Domain: Mickey-vs-Winnie is as follows:
A hundred years after two criminals disappeared into a dark and dangerous forest, a group of former students return to their run-down boarding school. Their reunion takes a terrifying turn when the convicts reappear, transformed into monstrous versions of figures from their childhood.
Public Domain Horror Films Like ‘Mickey-vs-Winnie’ Are Crafting A Sub-genre
Following the unexpected success of the 2023 horror film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, a wave of similar movies using public domain characters has emerged. Blood and Honey gained attention for its bold premise – reimagining familiar characters in a terrifying way – and its trailer went viral. Despite a low production budget of under $100,000, the film earned $7.7 million worldwide. While a sequel to Blood and Honey was made, many other filmmakers have since explored the same concept, creating horror films based on characters now in the public domain. The Dark Domain: Mickey-vs-Winnie is the newest example of this trend.
The creators of the horror film Blood and Honey are building a shared universe of twisted fairy tales. So far, this includes sequels to Blood and Honey, two horror films based on Winnie-the-Pooh, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, and Bambi: The Reckoning, which reimagines the Disney deer as a killer. They aren’t stopping there – a Pinocchio movie, Blood and Honey 3, and Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble (a crossover event bringing all their characters together) are all in development. Other filmmakers are also exploring public domain horror, with movies like 2024’s The Mouse Trap and Screamboat offering dark twists on the classic Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse. With the upcoming The Dark Domain: Mickey-vs-Winnie, this new horror subgenre looks set to continue growing, with many more similar films likely on the way.
