Lizzo recently shared her feelings about how being seen as ‘fat’ often overshadowed her other qualities, in a heartfelt post about her experience with weight loss.
Lizzo, the singer behind the hit song “Good As Hell,” has lost a significant amount of weight over the past few years and recently shared that she’s reached her weight loss goal.
Even though Lizzo had become well-known as a leader in the body positivity movement, she found it difficult to be recognized for qualities beyond her physical appearance.
In her first post on Substack, Lizzo explained she was frustrated with people always associating her with her body size. The post, titled ‘Why is everybody losing weight and what do we do? Sincerely, a person who’s lost weight,’ revealed her feelings on the subject.
She explained that she was frustrated because people focused on her weight instead of recognizing her abilities as a musician. She felt they assumed her personality revolved around being overweight, which overshadowed her talent.
Lizzo had readily accepted this position for a while, as she previously explained in an article where she strongly responded to hurtful memes.

Since becoming a public figure and openly embracing my body, the way I’ve been treated has felt deeply hurtful, almost like emotional abuse. This treatment is solely based on my weight.
Despite everything, I managed to turn things around. I playfully and relentlessly responded to those annoying memes. I understood people were making fun of my weight online, and I was okay with it.
Honestly, I just kept being me, because that’s all I know how to do. But it’s so frustrating! People actually accused me of faking it, of being ‘performative’! Can you believe that? Like, I was one of the very first musicians to put body positivity out there for everyone to see, and they thought it was some kind of act? It doesn’t even make sense! I am body positive, it’s just… me.
At first, Lizzo did not intend to lose weight.
Lizzo’s mental health suffered after she was sued by several former colleagues. Three backup dancers accused her of sexual harassment, body shaming, and creating a negative work environment. A former stylist also claimed the environment during Lizzo’s Big Grrrl Big Tour was sexually suggestive, racially insensitive, and illegal. Lizzo has refuted all of these allegations.
She explained that she began losing weight in the fall of 2023, coinciding with a period of severe depression. A damaging scandal had left her feeling isolated and abandoned, leading to suicidal thoughts. As a result, she ended contact with her friends and family.
She later described hitting a low point, saying she started to fall apart due to self-criticism and not taking care of herself. It was particularly difficult to witness this, given that her career had always been about promoting self-love. Ultimately, she decided she needed to change things and start actively working towards improvement.
Her health kick began with Pilates, an exercise she turned to to ‘process my pain through my body.’

She shared that her Pilates instructors were all Black women, and she discovered Pilates was actually co-created by a Black woman. She initially used Pilates for physical therapy, and the sessions were sometimes emotionally challenging. While she did lose some weight during that time, it wasn’t a focused effort. Later that winter, she decided she wanted to lose weight intentionally and planned to document her journey in a video.
Lizzo eventually understood she’d been using her weight as a way to protect herself, and emphasized that her desire to get in shape was about feeling good, not just appearances.
Through therapy, I realized my weight wasn’t just about size – it had been a source of comfort, security, and even a way to feel protected. Like my hair, it felt connected to time and held onto energy. I wanted to let go of that weight, so I started thinking of it not as ‘lost,’ but as ‘released.’ This felt empowering and positive, focusing on energy rather than vanity.
That being said, she still wanted to ‘change’ how she felt in her body.
Honestly, I needed a change, a real one, in how I felt physically. After my dad died in 2009, I just kept everything bottled up inside. Then, starting around 2011, I found myself stuck in some really damaging relationships. And since 2016, I’ve been carrying the burden of supporting my whole family. I just desperately wanted to release all of that weight, to finally let it all go.
Lizzo has said her weight loss is due to dedication and effort, but she’s also shared that she experimented with medications like Ozempic to assist her.

‘I’ve tried everything,’ she admitted on the Just Trish podcast in June.
For me, it all comes down to the simple science of calories. It’s about what you take in versus what you burn. And honestly, I believe Ozempic helps people because it naturally leads to eating less – that’s what I’ve observed, and it makes perfect sense to me.
She explained that feeling full is key, and if you can convince yourself you’ve had enough, it’s just as effective.
Lizzo has moved away from her previously very relaxed vegan diet, where she ate a lot of comfort food and consumed between 3,000 and 5,000 calories daily. She’s now following a more structured eating plan.
I noticed a big difference when I started eating real, whole foods like meat, chicken, and fish. I felt genuinely full, unlike before when I was filling up on processed foods that didn’t actually satisfy me.
The singer discussed being bullied for her body while appearing on The Jason Lee Show. She didn’t share the specific amount of weight she lost, but explained that the bullying stemmed from her confidence as a plus-sized woman.

‘I think it was crazy to people because I was fat,’ she stated.
She explained that the most surprising thing was people’s disbelief that someone who looked like her could also be confident.
Jason Lee commented that Lizzo looked better when she weighed more, and she quickly retorted, saying she felt great at any size.
Asked how much weight she’d lost, the singer playfully avoided giving a specific number, saying it would be too shocking for people to believe.
She explained that she’d been seeing TikTok videos claiming she’d lost 500 pounds, and she found it frustrating that people were focusing on a number instead of her overall well-being. She said it bothered her when people publicly discussed her weight loss with specific numbers.
In January, the singer proudly announced that she had achieved her weight loss goal.
She announced on Instagram that she had finally reached her weight loss goal, sharing, ‘I did it! Today, the scale showed I’ve achieved what I was working towards.’
Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve thought about this! Seeing this reminds me that you can achieve anything if you’re determined. Time to set some fresh goals!
