Okay, so I was freaking out when Childish Gambino just cancelled all his tour dates last year, and now Donald Glover finally explained why! Apparently, he went through some serious health scare – he hasn’t gone into super detail, but it was enough to make him stop everything. Honestly, just knowing he’s okay is a huge relief, even if it meant waiting so long to find out what happened. I’m just so glad he’s prioritizing his health!
The 42-year-old performer shared some deeply personal news while back on stage at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Knaw Carnival on Saturday. He explained that he had a stroke while touring on his New World Tour.
During the show in Louisiana, I was enjoying seeing everyone, but I started getting a terrible headache. I pushed through the performance, but my vision was blurry. After we got to Houston, I went to the hospital and found out I’d had a stroke, according to the doctor.
He quickly eased the tension with a joke about Jamie Foxx’s recent health issues, saying he immediately thought, ‘Wow, I’m still imitating Jamie Foxx!’ – a reference to Foxx’s stroke in 2023.
You know, when I really dig deep with people, I often find they’re carrying a lot. This particular person, after some hesitation, shared that their biggest fear wasn’t the immediate issue, but feeling like they were letting everyone down. That was the first thing on their mind, even before dealing with the problem itself.
The star went on to describe a cascade of further medical issues that followed.

He remembered breaking his foot and feeling frustrated that he hadn’t been able to keep his promise to visit Ireland. He also revealed he’d had heart surgery, and then needed a second operation as well.
Even though he’s been seriously ill, Glover shared with fans that the experience has given him a fresh perspective on life and made him even more grateful for the chance to perform.
You know, I’ve always believed there are two lives – the one we live, and the one that truly begins when we realize we only have one. And honestly, looking out at all of you, I feel incredibly grateful. This life, sharing my passion for singing and performing with you all, has been an absolute blessing. It’s not just a job, it’s everything.
He ended on a positive note, saying, ‘Live your life the way you want to, because if we ever have to go through this again, things can only improve.’
Last October, after performing in just 18 shows on the North American part of his New World Tour, Glover had to stop due to health problems he didn’t publicly share.
He was originally slated to do more than 50 performances.
He announced to his fans that after performing in New Orleans, he went to a Houston hospital to get checked out because he wasn’t feeling well. Doctors determined he wouldn’t be able to perform that night.

After running more tests, I realized I won’t be able to finish the U.S. tour as planned. I’m having surgery and need time to recover, which I’m taking very seriously.
This tour signaled the end of Glover’s time performing as Childish Gambino, coinciding with the release of his album, Bando Stone and the New World.
In addition to making music, Glover is a writer and actor.
Donald Glover created and acted in the FX series Atlanta, which concluded with its final episode in November 2022.
Last year he starred alongside Maya Erskine in Amazon Prime’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith series.
He married his partner of many years, Michelle White, in January 2024. They have three sons together: Legend, Drake, and Donald.
