The 2025 Red Bull Tetris USA National Final was an exciting event, culminating in a fantastic match between Christian “Sodium” Huynh and Mok Shik Thaddaeus “Coldless” Fam. Sodium took home the silver medal and won over the audience! After celebrating Coldless alongside his fellow Tetris players, Sodium spoke with Xpsp for an interview.

Sodium at the Red Bull Tetris USA National Final

The crowd at the Red Bull Tetris USA National Final in Hollywood, Florida, constantly cheered for Sodium as he advanced through the competition. He successfully played through both the initial round of 32 and a challenging top 8, facing skilled Tetris players like Amy H., Andrew Vu, Gladdon, BeastinShen, Amberdoodle, and Promooooo. The enthusiastic support continued when he went head-to-head with Coldless in the final match.

Esports players usually wear headphones that block out crowd noise during tournaments. But Xpsp observed that Sodium actually welcomed the crowd’s energy, and he believes it improved his performance during the competition.

I had planned on wearing AirPods, but the crowd was cheering so loudly for me,” Sodium explained. “I thought, ‘Maybe I should take them out and really hear everyone’s support.’ It definitely gave me a boost and helped me perform better.

He expressed his gratitude to his supporters and friends, saying he was overwhelmed by the amount of support he received. He hadn’t expected to make it this far, fearing elimination early on, but was enjoying the incredible experience. He acknowledged this level of recognition was likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and planned to savor it.

Sodium and his Tetris esports journey

Sodium told us he first learned about the Red Bull Tetris competition while competing at the Classic Tetris World Championship. He saw an ad that sparked his interest and began practicing that very night.

I was competing in the Classic Tetris World Championship, run by Vince Clemente, when I heard an ad for the game during a match. It got me really interested, so I started playing that same evening. I quickly became very good, and for a moment, I thought I could keep my skill a secret! But eventually, everyone figured it out, and it turned into a really competitive scene. I ended up having to compete against a lot of other skilled players.

Sodium pointed out that the Tetris version on Red Bull is quite different from what he’s used to. However, basic strategies, like clearing single lines, still apply, and his experience with current Tetris helped him learn quickly.

He also mentioned a hobby: he used to play video games like VALORANT and Overwatch. In Overwatch, his favorite characters to play were Genji, Doomfist, and Reinhardt.

Sodium shared that he’s focusing on competing in classic Tetris tournaments, including training for the World Championship.
