Paul Gascoigne has expressed regret for the hurt he caused his former wife, Sheryl, and spoke openly about his family, including his close relationship with his dancer son, Regan, in a recent interview on Sunday.
The 58-year-old former footballer and his wife, Sheryl, 62, experienced a difficult marriage following their wedding in 1996. Reports surfaced at the time detailing instances of both physical and emotional abuse, linked to his struggles with alcohol and mental health.
They had son Regan, now 29, in 1996 but divorced in 1998. They have since put the past behind them.
I recently spoke with The Times and opened up about a difficult time in my life. I shared that I deeply regret the hurt I caused someone, recalling one particularly challenging night. It’s something I’ve thought about a lot, and I truly am sorry for the pain I inflicted.
He shared that in 1998, he reached his lowest point and ended up on a train platform in Stevenage after drinking heavily.
He called his wife, Sheryl, and she convinced him not to go through with it. He was then placed on suicide watch at the hospital.

I’ve been following Sheryl and Paul’s story for years, and it’s so heartwarming! They got married back in July of 1996, and Paul immediately stepped in as a father to Sheryl’s kids, Mason and Bianca, officially adopting them as his own. It was a beautiful thing to witness.
In 2009, Sheryl released a memoir titled Stronger: My Life Surviving Gazza, which recounts their difficult relationship.
In his interview with The Times, he enthusiastically praised his son Regan, describing him as an incredible dancer. He predicted Regan would win the 2022 season of Dancing on Ice – and was proven right – calling him ‘amazing’.
In 2022, Paul shared that he and his son, Regan, connected through their shared experience with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This came after a difficult period in their relationship, which was affected by Paul’s struggles with alcohol and mental health.
He said they completely avoid discussing the past when they’re just hanging out as friends, preferring to focus on what’s happening now.
He shared with The Sun that when the group reunites, it feels like no time has passed at all. They now enjoy spending time together as friends, which he describes as something special and feels fortunate to experience.
The condition caused him to repeatedly feel the need to play without underwear during games, and also to retie the laces of his right boot after the match had already begun – something that frustrated England manager Terry Venables in the 1990s.
Looking back on his amazing career, Paul recalled a funny moment: ‘The game was still in play, but I stopped to tie my shoelace. The opposing player couldn’t understand why I bothered! I just had to, and I didn’t even wear pants during the game.’

Paul left his son when he was an infant, following several arguments with his former wife, Sheryl.
Regan has spoken about his remorse for comments he made in a 2013 documentary, where he expressed a desire to distance himself from his father.
In a past interview with The Sun, the dancer described their relationship as strong, saying they’ve overcome challenges and are now in a very loving place. They explained that any past difficulties are behind them.
Regan shared that he loves spending time with his humorous father, explaining that his father’s acceptance of his bisexuality was a huge relief.
In 2021, Paul publicly voiced his support for his son, Regan, after Regan came out as bisexual in a TV interview months prior.
Paul Gascoigne, the famous footballer known as Gazza, shared with The Mirror that he received a text message the night before and then saw the person on television discussing the same topic.
I reassured him that no matter what he decided, I’d always be there for him and he should pursue what truly makes him happy.
My first thought was ‘good for him.’ It takes a lot of courage to perform like that on television. He’s a talented and in-shape dancer, and I’m really proud of everything he’s accomplished.
The athlete shared that Regan lived with him for a few weeks when he was first starting his career in Newcastle. Now, he and Regan stay connected by calling and texting each other often.
