Watching celebrities learn to dance on Dancing With The Stars is always fun, but the show also generates a lot of behind-the-scenes drama. Last season featured reported conflicts between host Julianne Hough and contestant Anna Delvey, plus a romantic connection between a celebrity and their professional dance partner. This season, currently airing, is no different – contestant Corey Feldman is openly discussing the difficulties he experienced while filming.
Corey Feldman, known for his role in The Goonies, recently told the Daily Mail about the negativity he experienced both publicly and behind the scenes while competing on Dancing with the Stars. Even though he was eliminated in the first week, Feldman says he witnessed a problematic environment during his time on the show, stating:
The show itself was fine, but the backstage conflicts were incredibly messy and unpleasant. The amount of unnecessary drama and negativity I witnessed was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced – it was truly toxic.
It might be surprising for those new to Dancing with the Stars – everyone always seems happy in rehearsal clips and behind-the-scenes footage online. But longtime viewers know that things can get complicated between the cast and celebrities.
Much of the talk stems from viewers’ guesses and assumptions. It’s well-known that Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) involves close physical contact and rigorous training, which often sparks romantic rumors. This is why Joey Graziadei, the winner of Season 33, specifically requested a partner who was already happily in a relationship – to prevent the typical dating speculation that surrounds the show. According to Feldman, once the media picked up on any rumors, it was very difficult to ignore the resulting headlines.
Everyone on set gets along really well and the atmosphere is positive. We’re all working so hard, we barely have time to breathe. But then you start seeing negative stories in the press – rumors about conflicts between people, questions about work ethic, or even accusations that someone ruined things. For example, there were reports that Corey Feldman was difficult to work with and negatively impacted the show, which just didn’t reflect the reality on set.
This season, actor David Feldman, known for his role in The Lost Boys, received a lot of negative attention in the press, particularly from Jenna Johnson’s brother-in-law and former Dancing with the Stars professional, Maks Chmerkovskiy. Just as rehearsals were beginning, Feldman unexpectedly missed almost a week of practice, causing concern among producers and his fellow cast members. This left him with only two weeks to prepare for the show’s premiere.
Following comments about the actor from Gremlins having a negative attitude and poor work ethic towards his sister-in-law (Johnson), Maksim Chmerkovskiy shared details with the Daily Mail. Corey Feldman seemed unhappy with this, suggesting Chmerkovskiy dismissed the issue.
I started wondering where all this was coming from, and I asked Jen. I said, ‘Where is this coming from?’ She said it was just Maks, and rolled her eyes, adding, ‘Don’t pay attention to him, he just wants attention.’ I was really surprised.
This season isn’t the first time Maks Chmerkovskiy has caused a stir with his comments. The former Dancing with the Stars pro publicly criticized new pro Jan Ravnik, stating he shouldn’t be a professional dancer on the show because of his limited ballroom experience. Though he didn’t respond as strongly as Feldman and Chmerkovskiy, the Eras Tour dancer did address his own critics.
After some negative press affected how fans of Dancing With the Stars viewed him, Feldman and his partner, Johnson, clarified the situation on social media following his exit from the show. They both confirmed there were no hard feelings, and Johnson explained in an interview on Danielle With The Stars! that she was aware Feldman had prior commitments that caused him to miss rehearsals.
Okay, so we’re down to the last episode of the season and I’m really hoping some of the things people have been saying get brought up! If you want to see who wins the mirrorball, make sure you watch the Dancing with the Stars Season 34 finale live this Tuesday, November 25th at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC, or if you have Disney+, you can stream it then too.
