Netflix Made ‘Stranger Things’ Cut a Face-Melting Death

Throughout its run, Stranger Things hasn’t been afraid to kill off characters in impactful, sometimes heartbreaking ways. The show is heavily inspired by 1980s movies, both in its setting and its style, and the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have used the conventions of the genre to justify shocking and often bloody deaths when the story demands it. However, even for Netflix, one particular death scene proved to be excessively graphic.

In an interview with The Times, the show’s creators explained that a character’s death led Netflix to ask them to remove the scene. Although they stated they usually ‘try to restrain themselves,’ they then continued with:

We had to remove a scene from the third season where a character, Bruce—a really annoying journalist—was literally melting. His nose was shown dissolving into his face, but Netflix wasn’t comfortable with it and asked us to cut it.

Matt also pointed out that removing the scene was expensive. He also mentioned the streaming service had previously asked them to cut a death scene from Season 1, involving the diner owner.

It’s a shame, because that scene cost around $40,000 to create! The only other scene Netflix requested be removed was the one in season one where Benny Hammond is shot – you could actually see the bullet hit him.

Stranger Things is known for its impactful deaths, like those of Barb and Eddie. The show has also surprised viewers with shocking moments, such as Crissy Cunningham’s gruesome death and the violence at Hawkins Lab. However, even with plans for a more intense final season, Netflix still has limits on how far the show can go.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Promises The “Most Violent Death” Yet

The latest trailer for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things suggests a thrilling, action-packed conclusion as the characters fight to defeat Vecna and save the world. Eleven is using her abilities more than ever, and the situation is incredibly dangerous for everyone involved. The show will also jump forward in time, and the ending remains uncertain, as Ross Duffer has indicated.

We originally planned for each installment to grow with the characters and our existing viewers. However, we’re constantly gaining new fans, which is great, but we hope it doesn’t upset parents if the content evolves.

Season 5 of Stranger Things aims to deliver on what fans have been expecting. Although Matt Duffer noted it won’t be as graphically violent as Season 4, he also revealed it will raise the stakes in another way.

“It has the most violent death of any season.”

The last season of Stranger Things will be released in three parts on Netflix. The first part arrives November 26th, followed by the second on Christmas Day. The series will conclude with a final release on New Year’s Eve. While it’s unknown how the story will end, viewers can expect more surprising and heartbreaking moments as the show says farewell to the town of Hawkins.
