Ben Affleck cuts a somber figure at Las Vegas Grand Prix while preparing for F1 documentary

Ben Affleck appeared thoughtful while at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas on Friday.

The actor, 53, who’s become well-known for the popular ‘sad Affleck’ meme, was spotted at the racetrack before the last practice session.

The actor from The Town stayed warm in a blue jacket with a soft brown collar, layered over a grey sweater. He paired this with khaki pants and appeared freshly shaven.

The outing comes more than eight years after the legendary ‘sad Affleck’ photo went viral. 

The famous photo, taken in London in 2016, depicts the actor wearing a blue sweater and jeans, looking tired and thoughtful while holding a cigarette.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, Artists Equity, is partnering with Whisper Group and Mark Stewart Productions to create a film about Dan Fallows, the technical director of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. The movie, currently called ‘Turbulence: The Greatest Mind in Formula One,’ was announced by Deadline on Thursday.

The documentary offers behind-the-scenes access to Newey’s new team at its Silverstone campus.

The story will also cover his work creating a car capable of competing for the World Championship with the British team.

Newey has won 12 World Constructors’ Championships and 14 World Drivers’ Championships.

Affleck described the film as being about more than just racing; it tells the story of a legendary figure and their remarkable career, marked by constant ambition and the ability to reinvent themselves.

The day before, Affleck was seen smoking a cigarette while running errands in Los Angeles.

He later appeared on stage at the Beverly Hilton, during the American Cinematheque Awards, which celebrated Michael B. Jordan.

He was part of a star-studded group of presenters that also included Bradley Cooper, Tessa Thompson, Daniel Kaluuya, Mahershala Ali, Octavia Spencer, and Phylicia Rashad.

At the Beverly Hilton that evening, Affleck embodied old Hollywood elegance, looking sharp in a classic black suit and tie as he approached the microphone.

They first met in 2013 after Affleck watched Michael B. Jordan’s acclaimed movie, Fruitvale Station, which was directed by Ryan Coogler.

Jordan and Affleck developed a close, mentoring relationship, as Jordan described it, during their conversation for Variety’s Directors on Directors series.

Affleck remembered instantly knowing Jordan had exceptional talent. He warned him to prepare for the challenges that come with fame, things people often don’t share beforehand.

He pointed out that he wasn’t alone in his rise to fame, as he achieved success at the same time as his close friend and frequent collaborator, Damon.

Ben Affleck hasn’t received an American Cinematheque Award personally, but the organization did showcase a collection of his directed films in 2023.

In 2010, Damon received an American Cinematheque Award, joining a prestigious group of honorees that included his former spouses, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds.

Many acclaimed actors and directors have also been honored with this award, including Steven Spielberg, Bradley Cooper, Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, Matthew McConaughey, Helen Mirren, Spike Lee, Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis, George Clooney, Jodie Foster, and Mel Gibson.
