A new Star Trek movie is reportedly in the works, with a well-respected writing and directing team attached. Paramount Pictures is making the film a high priority, but there are a few details that might disappoint some fans.
According to Variety, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will write and direct the upcoming film.
This directing duo recently worked on the Dungeons & Dragons movie and the hilarious comedy Game Night. They’ve also lent their talents to films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Horrible Bosses.

Despite having previously collaborated with Chris Pine on the Dungeons & Dragons movie, this project isn’t a continuation of that storyline. That means we won’t see the return of Chris Hemsworth, Zoë Saldaña, Zachary Quinto, or Simon Pegg.
This new Star Trek series will be a completely original story, meaning familiar faces like Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Michelle Yeoh won’t be appearing.
It’s likely no surprise, especially after Pegg mentioned in August that David Ellison of Paramount Skydance was eager to revive the film series. However, even then, there was hope of reuniting the original cast for a reboot.
Simon Pegg mentioned that David Ellison is a huge Star Trek enthusiast and genuinely cares about the franchise, so he’d be thrilled with it.
Honestly, I’d be thrilled to do another movie with that crew. I really love those guys. It’s been tough since what happened – losing one of us was incredibly painful – but I think it’s time we all came back together. JJ’s always hinted at scripts being worked on, and I feel like now’s the moment.
Stewart has expressed interest in reprising his role as Picard in a future movie, and Quentin Tarantino has also publicly considered directing a Star Trek film.
Unfortunately, things aren’t going as planned. However, with Goldstein and Daley joining the team, there’s still a lot of potential for success and excitement.
The new Star Trek does not currently have a release window.
