A Man on the Inside Season 2: Why It Fell Short of Season 1’s Impact

The second season of Netflix’s A Man on the Inside, featuring Ted Danson, is now available, but it doesn’t quite live up to the quality of the first season. The show was initially very popular, largely because of its connection to the highly-rated series The Good Place.

Though not a continuation of the story, the new show A Man on the Inside feels connected to The Good Place, leading some to speculate they might exist in the same fictional world. This is largely due to the fact that Michael Schur created both shows, and several actors from The Good Place – including Ted Danson, D’Arcy Carden, and Jason Mantzoukas – have roles in A Man on the Inside’s two seasons.

Although the second season of A Man on the Inside started well, it didn’t quite capture the same excitement as the first, and I think I know why.

A Man On The Inside Season 2 Didn’t Have The Same Impact

Like many shows from Michael Schur, A Man on the Inside initially appears to be a cheerful and easy watch. However, a deeper look reveals a surprisingly profound story, focusing on the main character, Charles, and his personal journey of self-discovery.

After his wife passed away, Charles had settled into a dull and lonely routine, assuming his later years would be uneventful. But everything changed when he took on a surprising new job: finding a jewel thief at a retirement home.

During that time, Charles wrestled with big life questions – things like getting older, dealing with illness, and figuring out what really matters later in life. This led to a show that was both funny and deeply moving. Sadly, the second season wasn’t as strong as the first.

The latest season lacked the emotional depth of the first. While there were still touching scenes, it didn’t explore big themes like life, death, and growing older with the same impact. I don’t think the performances or writing were to blame; the problem was with the original story material itself.

A Man On The Inside Season 1’s True Story May Have Been The Secret Sauce

The premise of A Man on the Inside – a man going undercover as a resident in a retirement community to solve a crime – might seem unbelievable, but it’s actually based on a true story. The show is inspired by the documentary The Mole Agent, which follows Sergio Chamy as he investigates claims of abuse and neglect at a care home.

While the show did change the original story—opting for a lighter plot about a jewel thief instead of elder abuse—its basis in a true story about someone now considered a local hero likely gave it a powerful impact. This connection to reality may have been a major reason for the success of A Man on the Inside.

When the show couldn’t use its original source material, season 2 of A Man on the Inside shifted to a storyline where Charles investigated a blackmail scheme at a college. Although Ted Danson was still fantastic and the show remained funny, the season just didn’t feel as strong as the first.
