The popular Dragon Ball series is still celebrating its 40th anniversary, even though it technically turned 41 recently – and that’s okay with me! Fans can now enjoy a dubbed version of the show in HD, and there’s an exciting event planned for next year that might include some major news. Plus, fans worldwide are being asked to vote for their favorite characters, which is a fun way to get involved.
The official Dragon Ball website is running a poll to find fans’ all-time favorite characters. Early results are in, and with the first round of voting closing on November 24th, I was surprised to see one character currently ranking in the top 10.
Bardock, The Father Of Goku, Is In The Top 10 Of Most Popular Dragon Ball Characters
The top ten results of the Dragon Ball vote were pretty much what I expected, except for one character. Coming in at number seven is Bardock, a Saiyan better known as Goku’s father.
Bardock first appeared in the special episode Bardock: The Father of Goku. He was one of the original Saiyans who worked for Frieza, during the time when Vegeta’s father, King Vegeta, was still ruling. Bardock attempted to fight against Frieza and save his people, but he was killed during the rebellion.
Besides his featured story, Bardock has mostly appeared briefly in other Dragon Ball media, and is often a character you can play in the video games. It’s somewhat surprising that he’s considered one of the strongest fighters, given how little he’s actually been shown – he wouldn’t even make my personal list of the top ten strongest characters.
Who Else Is In The Top 10 Of Dragon Ball?
Considering how popular Dragon Ball is globally, it’s no surprise to see many of its characters ranking high. I’ve encountered them frequently in fan creations like cosplay, artwork, and memes. Here’s a current look at the standings with a few days remaining in the first round of voting (according to X).

- Vegeta
- Gohan
- Vegito
- Piccolo
- Future Trunks
- Bardock
- Cell
- Android 18
- Frieza
It’s no surprise that Goku is considered the strongest character, though Vegeta might disagree! Cell and Frieza rightfully earn their places as the top villains from Dragon Ball Z – they’re definitely the most memorable. While I think Frieza is more threatening than Cell, that’s just my opinion.
Even if you haven’t watched Dragon Ball Z in years, the new series, Daima, is worth checking out for any fan of the franchise.
I was surprised to see Bardock in the top 10, but I was even more shocked that Krillin didn’t make it. He’s currently in eleventh place, just outside the top 10. While this ranking might stay the same, I think Krillin could still climb into the top 10 later on.
Vegito is a powerful and somewhat rare character in Dragon Ball, and it’s easy to see why he’s so popular. He’s a fusion of Goku and Vegeta, who are already two of the most beloved characters and frequently featured in classic anime openings. I’m excited to see if this top ten ranking stays consistent when the final list is revealed on the official YouTube channel on January 24th.
