Sian Welby admits she’s put her relationship with fiancé Jake Beckett ‘on the back-burner’ and says she doesn’t have ‘capacity’ to plan her wedding now she’s a mother

Sian Welby has shared that planning her wedding to Jake Beckett has been delayed because she’s been focusing on the challenges of being a new mother and simply doesn’t have the emotional energy right now.

In 2023, producer Jake proposed to Sian during a romantic trip. He got down on one knee to ask her to marry him.

Sian says she’s too busy helping Jake raise their 17-month-old daughter, Ruby, to even think about planning her wedding right now.

Despite trying to find time amidst work and childcare for their daughter Ruby, the couple hasn’t been able to have regular date nights.

Let me tell you, as someone who’s seen a lot of couples navigate new parenthood, it’s so common for the relationship to take a backseat when a baby arrives. You’re both so focused on adjusting to life with a little one that things like quality time together, even a simple date night, can easily fall by the wayside. We definitely tried to prioritize those moments, but it’s a real juggling act, isn’t it?

By 8pm, we’re finished for the day, completely exhausted – it’s that feeling of barely being able to stay awake on the train ride home, and it really hits you how demanding the job is.

Honestly, it’s just… everyone talks about those first couple of years with a new baby like it’s this constant state of exhaustion and just trying to survive. One minute you think you’re getting the hang of things, and then bam, they hit a new stage and it starts all over again! It’s relentless, but you just keep going, you know?

Generally, Jake and I are both dealing with a lot right now, so we’re making a point of regularly checking in with each other and taking responsibility when we mess up – basically, taking turns apologizing.

Sian explained she’s hesitant to begin wedding planning because she doesn’t want it to feel like just another chore.

She admitted she just doesn’t have the mental energy for complicated wedding planning. She wants to actually enjoy the process and definitely doesn’t want it to feel like work, a burden, or something stressful.

‘I think when I’m in the right headspace, maybe if, I don’t know I find time for it and slow down.’

Sian met Jake whilst working at Global, the parent company of Capital radio.

Sian envisions a large and lively wedding when the time comes. She dreams of a celebration, perhaps in a barn, where guests can have fun and enjoy a free bar.

Sian gave birth to her daughter, Ruby, in June 2024. This came shortly after ITV gave her a new role as a co-host on This Morning, following her previous work presenting competitions and segments on the show.

The 39-year-old presenter told the Daily Mail she went back to work only three months after having a baby because she needed to support her family financially. She was also worried about losing the career she’d spent 15 years building.

Sian, co-host of Capital’s breakfast show with Jordan North and Chris Stark, recently shared that she often puts others before herself.

She confessed that she rarely prioritizes her own needs, often putting others first, even her partner. She shared this while promoting ITV Studios’ new mobile quiz app, The Spin Off, expressing a desire for some personal time.

It feels like ages since I planned my own birthday or even just made plans to hang out with my female friends.

I’m constantly juggling work and taking care of my baby, so planning the wedding keeps getting delayed. We’re both already completely overwhelmed.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, and honestly, I never pictured myself being engaged for so long, but here we are.

While still working part-time at New Look, Sian appeared in a New! Magazine advertisement, which caught the eye of Richard Desmond, the former owner of Channel 5.

In 2010, she became the new weather presenter for Channel 5 News, a role she held for six years and which launched her career.

She explained that while she was going back to work three months after having a baby, she understood taking a full year off wasn’t a realistic option for her situation, and she couldn’t predict the consequences if she did.

It’s rare to find people in this field who would dedicate that much time to something like this. It really takes someone who feels confident and stable in their position to be able to do that.

I need to earn money to cover my expenses and support my family. This work represents fifteen years of effort, and I’m glad to finally see these opportunities come to fruition.

You probably recognize me from my work on This Morning or at Capital. I’d worked hard to get those opportunities, and I wasn’t willing to risk losing them or interrupting the progress I was making. I was really enjoying how things were finally starting to take off.
