The One Show’s Alex Jones reflects on her co-host Jermaine Jenas’ sexting scandal as she says: ‘We were good friends and I was the last to know’

Alex Jones, co-host of The One Show, has spoken about the sexting scandal involving her colleague Jermaine Jenas, revealing she found out about it after everyone else.

Alex, 48, and Jermaine, 42, were colleagues on a well-known evening magazine show, working together from 2020 until Jermaine left in 2024.

Jermaine was removed from the show after the BBC fired him for sending inappropriate messages to female colleagues while working there.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen how quickly things can change, and Jermaine’s situation is a tough example of that. The recent sexting scandal unfortunately led to the end of his 13-year marriage. His wife, Ellie – and the mother of three of his four children – announced they were divorcing back in March. It’s a really difficult time for everyone involved, and a reminder that trust is so important in any relationship.

Alex recently talked about the issue on Jamie Laing’s podcast, Great Company, in a candid conversation.

She said: ‘JJ and I had become good friends. I was the last to know.

‘The BBC dealt with it, and I think if people feel uncomfortable, they have to deal with it.’

The speaker went on to say that if their daughter felt unsafe at work, they would hope they’d raised her to feel empowered to say something about it.

If she felt comfortable enough to share her concerns – and it takes courage to do so – I hope the company would take them seriously and address the issue.

‘Lots of journalists are asked, ‘Have you ever had experiences that are uncomfortable?

Looking back at the 1990s and early 2000s, there were instances and expressions that weren’t ideal.

However, nothing has ever really affected me deeply, or truly frightened me. And knowing what I was like back then, I understand why I wouldn’t have reacted well to it.

Jamie explained that people might hesitate to speak up if their job was at risk, admitting it’s a common concern.

Alex admitted he wouldn’t have spoken up himself, and expressed admiration for the women who did, calling it a very courageous act.

I was so shocked to hear about Jermaine losing his job with the BBC back in August 2024. It meant he had to leave The One Show, which he was brilliant on, and also lost his roles as a football expert on Match of the Day and 5 Live. It’s a real shame, especially as he’s also a dad already, and I really enjoyed his work.

The BBC confirmed their decision while he was on air guest hosting talkSPORT’s drive time show.

Before dealing with the fallout from the scandal with a PR team, his advertising agency, MC Saatchi, ended their relationship with him.

The presenter admitted he’d been dishonest with his wife, Ellie, while they were on vacation. He secretly took a Zoom call with his BBC supervisors after explicit messages he’d sent first came to light at the company.

He also explained that she asked him to leave their one-million-pound home in Hertfordshire after he confessed to sending inappropriate messages to two coworkers.

Jermaine recently shared on the Filthy Rellas podcast that past issues in their relationship were also a factor in the split.

He clarified that his marriage hasn’t ended because of some text messages he exchanged with colleagues at work.

We went through a difficult time, and ultimately decided that we’d be better parents to our children if we ended our romantic relationship and remained friends instead.

My wife and I shared sixteen wonderful years together – it’s rare to see a relationship last that long. We had our share of challenges and good times, and she supported me through the difficult final years of my career. I’m so grateful for her.

Shortly after being fired by the BBC, Jermaine told The Sun that his wife was very angry about it.

He said: ‘We’ve not really spoken properly since. She’s absolutely raging.’

He explained that his main concern was his children. Because of photographers camped outside his home during the school holidays, they were unable to go out and were stuck inside.

‘They’re like, ‘What’s going on, Daddy?’. It’s tough.’

He added: ‘I’ve got to take responsibility and I’ve apologised to all of them.

Honestly, I’m at a loss for words. Things are really tough at home for the kids right now, but my wife is being incredibly strong through it all.

‘My wife is solid and she’s amazing. She is kind. She just needs some time.’

During the interview, Jermaine assured Ellie that she shouldn’t worry about other women coming forward with similar stories of inappropriate behavior.

Following the recent scandal, the Daily Mail reported that two years ago, during the World Cup in Qatar, Jermaine repeatedly messaged a woman with unwanted and explicit content. He asked her if she wanted to be with his “boy” and sent her an inappropriate picture, even after she clearly showed she wasn’t interested.

The following week, we reported that he persistently harassed a junior make-up artist, repeatedly asking her for sexual favors. When she told him she was in a relationship, he responded by suggesting she come to his dressing room early for a sexual act, falsely claiming it wouldn’t be considered cheating.

He was building a reputation as a football expert with BT Sport when this happened in 2017.
