Fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are getting mixed news. Paramount Pictures is making a new live-action movie, which is great! However, this means the previously planned R-rated The Last Ronin movie is now on hold. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount wants the first live-action Turtles film in over ten years to be suitable for all ages. Ilya Naishuller, the director of Nobody, was reportedly considered to direct The Last Ronin, but those plans are currently paused, though the studio may revisit the idea in the future.

Paramount Pictures is bringing in producer Neal H. Moritz—known for his work on the Fast & Furious and Sonic the Hedgehog movies—to relaunch the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series. It’s been about ten years since Michael Bay’s TMNT films, which received mixed reactions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount wants to make the new TMNT movies similar in style to Sonic the Hedgehog, and one source stated the studio is looking to replicate the success of Sonic by hiring the same producer. Sonic the Hedgehog has earned over $1 billion for Paramount, and the studio fully owns the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise through its ownership of Nickelodeon, which acquired the property in 2009.

As a huge fan, I’m really disappointed to hear that Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was canceled on Paramount+. Apparently, those working on it were told the show didn’t align with what the owners had in mind for the franchise. It’s worrying because Mutant Mayhem was such a fantastic movie – many consider it the best TMNT film yet, and it got great reviews! We were all looking forward to the sequel planned for September 2027, and this news makes me wonder what’s going on with the whole series now. I really hope this doesn’t impact the future of the movies.

The studio is trying to reach both longtime and new fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While films like Mutant Mayhem are geared towards younger viewers, adapting the darker story Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin aims to attract older fans—a strategy similar to what Marvel and DC are doing. The Last Ronin is set in a future where almost all the Turtles are dead, and the last one seeks revenge on Shredder. Previously, Paramount wanted to follow Sony’s success with Spider-Man by releasing both animated and live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers movies at different times.

The previous live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Out of the Shadows (2016), was a sequel to a 2014 reboot produced by Michael Bay, which proved divisive among fans. While Out of the Shadows was considered better than the first film – largely because it finally introduced iconic villains like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang – it didn’t perform well in theaters. This opened the door for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to create their unique animated film, Mutant Mayhem. However, recent news about a new live-action movie and comments from Paramount suggest that Rogen and Goldberg’s critically praised version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might not continue beyond its next installment.
