House of the Dragon Season 3 Photos Include Spoilers, Break GoT Canon

Good news for fans of Game of Thrones! HBO has confirmed that both of its spinoff shows will be back for another season, and they’ve also shared a first glimpse of what’s to come.

The show is expected to return to HBO in the summer of 2026, though the network hasn’t announced an official release date yet. In addition to being renewed for a third season before the premiere, the fantasy series has also given fans a first look at new footage. However, while the released images hint at more action and intense battles, they also appear to reveal a major departure from the original Game of Thrones storyline.

On November 20th, HBO held a press event showcasing exciting news and updates. The announcements, including renewals and sneak peeks, were particularly well-received, especially regarding Game of Thrones. HBO revealed that Season 4 will debut in 2028, two years after the previously anticipated date.

The preview also offered a first glimpse of Emma D’Arcy as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen. Photos show Rhaenyra looking at the gold crown she received from King Viserys I Targaryen. However, the image of Daemon was particularly striking, depicting him prepared for a fierce battle while commanding an army in the Riverlands.

The initial preview suggests intense and violent conflicts are coming, with the tagline “War is here.” We see Daemon leading the way, followed by Lord Oscar Tully and the backing of multiple Houses, including his own, House Tully. The images also imply the series may deviate from established lore in the Game of Thrones universe.

It’s difficult to tell which battle Daemon Targaryen is commanding in the picture, but it represents a significant change from the source material. In George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, Daemon wasn’t involved in any battles.

The TV show House of the Dragon has made some significant changes to the original story, and this has caused some debate, even with the author, George R.R. Martin.

Will House of the Dragon End With Season 4?

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I remember the uproar over how the original series ended – it really felt like they ran out of source material and the final season didn’t live up to expectations. It’s good to see the spinoffs, House of the Dragon in particular, still have a solid foundation in the books, at least for now. I’ve heard they’re aiming for a four-season arc based on the existing material, which hopefully means a more satisfying conclusion.

HBO president Casey Bloys explained that the network generally allows show creators to decide when their series should end, as long as the ending feels natural. He stated they support creators in making that decision and will collaborate with them throughout the process.

He explained that sometimes the team assesses whether the story feels like it’s reached a natural conclusion during the season. He didn’t have any current updates on that process, but promised to share information when it became available. Showrunner Ryan Condal hinted at this possibility before, but there’s been no official announcement.

House of the Dragon will return with Season 3 on HBO in the summer of 2026.
