Smokey Robinson faces new sexual assault claims from another ex-housekeeper, car detailer

Two additional former employees have joined a $50 million lawsuit against Smokey Robinson and his wife, Frances, alleging sexual assault by the singer. This brings the total number of accusers in the case to more than one.

Last week, the group of people suing the couple for sexual assault and unpaid wages asked a Los Angeles court to add two new individuals to their case. A fifth housekeeper and a man who worked on the couple’s cars both claim that Robinson sexually assaulted them by grabbing their hands and forcing them to touch him inappropriately while they were working at his home in Chatsworth.

Christopher Frost, Robinson’s lawyer, released a statement refuting the new accusations, but didn’t respond to a request for comment from the Los Angeles Times on Thursday. He stated that the two people making the claims – listed in court papers as Jane Doe 5 and John Doe 1 – are connected to a group that has been working together to damage the Robinsons’ reputation and generate negative media attention.

Smokey Robinson’s lawyer strongly denies the claims made in a sexual assault lawsuit, calling them untrue and offensive. They plan to request the court to throw out the case against the Motown legend.

Despite a recent complaint, Frost continues to defend himself against what he calls a smear campaign. He previously described the initial claims as a dishonest attempt to get money from him, and reiterated that stance, telling TMZ that the anonymous group and their lawyers are simply seeking publicity through false accusations.

The legal filing detailed the planned revisions to the complaint, specifically regarding claims that Jane Doe 5 and John Doe 1 were sexually assaulted while employed by the Robinsons. Jane Doe 5 worked as a housekeeper for the family from 2005 to 2011. She initially took time off due to a work injury but later returned to her position around 2007.

In court documents, Jane Doe 5 claims the singer, William Robinson Jr., repeatedly asked her to scrub his back while he was in the second-floor bathroom. She alleges he would turn around while showering, exposing himself, and then ask her to scrub his back. She also claims that on more than ten occasions, he tried to force her to touch him, grabbing her hand. According to the documents, she would strongly push his hands away and leave the bathroom to avoid unwanted contact.

Robinson reportedly had a habit of walking around naked and would sometimes brush his elbow against Jane Doe 5’s chest. This caused her significant distress, leading her to undergo a breast reduction in 2015, long after her employment with the celebrity couple ended. She also alleges that the singer repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances towards her, even after she wasn’t offered a new position, and once suggested she join him at a hotel.

Jane Doe 5 is also suing Frances Robinson, claiming Robinson created a hostile work environment. Doe 5 says Robinson blamed her for a chimney-cleaning injury and insisted she continue working despite being hurt. She further alleges Robinson didn’t do enough to stop her husband’s alleged sexual misconduct and that Robinson often yelled at employees, using offensive and racially insensitive language – claims that mirror those made by other plaintiffs.

She reiterated her previous claims that the couple, married in 2022, didn’t pay their employees the required minimum wage or overtime, as she originally stated in the lawsuit.

As a critic, I’m following a fascinating and frankly disturbing legal battle. Smokey Robinson, a true Motown icon, has fired back at his accusers with a massive $500 million countersuit. Now, the lawyers representing the women who initially brought the allegations are calling Robinson’s move a completely unfounded and retaliatory tactic. It’s a complicated situation, and frankly, a sad one, given Robinson’s legacy, but it’s clear this is far from over.

According to court documents, John Doe 1 began working for the couple in 2013, detailing their cars and providing related services. He claims that shortly after starting the job, he was subjected to sexual harassment by Smokey Robinson. The documents allege that Robinson would frequently appear at John Doe 1’s workplace wearing only underwear and would then sexually assault him in public view. He also reportedly made inappropriate gestures and comments, and invited John Doe 1 into a private room near his work area.

According to court documents, the singer repeatedly made unwanted advances toward John Doe 1 and told him to dress appropriately. In 2022, the musician allegedly grabbed John Doe 1’s hand and tried to place it on his body. John Doe 1 immediately pulled away, turned, and left the area.

According to court documents, the Robinsons fired him soon after the incident but asked him to come back about a year later. The motion alleges that Smokey Robinson continued to behave inappropriately, appearing partially nude, touching himself, and making sexually suggestive comments. One former employee, identified as John Doe 1, reported feeling humiliated, emotionally distressed, and fearing for his safety and dignity. He eventually quit working for the singer and his wife after discovering other former employees had made similar complaints.

John Doe 1 isn’t pursuing claims about unpaid wages. Instead, he’s filing a lawsuit based on allegations of sexual battery, assault, gender-based violence, and the negligent infliction of emotional distress.

A hearing for the motion is set for Jan. 6, and a trial for October 2027.
