How To Train Your Dragon 2 Starts ‘Pretty Soon,’ And Mason Thames Told Me What It’s Like To Get To Be In All These Sequels

Mason Thames has quickly become a standout actor this year. He starred as Hiccup in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film this summer, and recently appeared in both Regretting You and Black Phone 2. It’s been a busy 2025 for Thames, and as he gets ready to film the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, he’s shared how much it means to him to bring these popular characters to life on screen.

In Black Phone 2, Jacob Thames reprises his role as Finney Blake, the main character from the 2021 film The Black Phone. Thames has grown a lot since the first movie. I recently spoke with him and asked how working on the sequel is influencing his approach to How To Train Your Dragon 2. While he couldn’t share many details about the upcoming film, he emphasized that he’s aware of how much fans love it, and that the 2014 animated movie holds a special place in his heart.

It’s amazing how much people love these characters – I’m a big fan myself! That makes it really important to me to do a good job with the next film and honor what came before. The second movie is especially meaningful to me within the whole trilogy, and I’m incredibly excited to start working on it soon.

All three How to Train Your Dragon movies were well-received, but many fans, including Mason Thames, especially love the second one. It takes place five years later and shows the world of Berk thriving now that humans and dragons live together peacefully. The story follows Hiccup as he tries to stop dragon trappers, and also features a heartwarming reunion with his mother, Valka, voiced by Cate Blanchett.

Thames also pointed out that most actors never get to play the same character in more than one film, and he’s incredibly enthusiastic about what’s coming up – perhaps even more so than anyone else.

It’s hard to put into words, but revisiting a character I’ve played before is incredibly enjoyable and a real privilege. Not many actors get to return for sequels, and it’s amazing to step back into the role again. It’s definitely one of my favorite things to do.

Dean DeBlois, who directed the first How to Train Your Dragon films, returns to write and direct the sequel. Following the huge success of the 2025 original – which made over $600 million worldwide – How to Train Your Dragon 2 will arrive in theaters on June 11, 2027.
