Steven Knight breaks his silence on the James Bond script and jokingly teases who Daniel Craig’s replacement could be

Steven Knight recently shared an update on the progress of the new James Bond script during an interview on talkSPORT.

In August, it was announced the British screenwriter, 65, would write the latest 007 movie. 

Steven is famous for creating the popular BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders, featuring Cillian Murphy, which will continue with a film in 2026. His latest historical series, House of Guinness, recently premiered on Netflix this fall.

Jeff Stelling and Gabby Agbonlahor chatted with Steven, asking him about the storyline and who might play James Bond next.

Daniel Craig, age 57, finished his run as James Bond with the 2021 film No Time To Die. He played the famous spy in a total of five movies over fifteen years.

Steven said: ‘I absolutely can’t talk about anything to do with it.’

Jeff, 70, joked: ‘No pressure writing a screenplay for a Bond film I would imagine?’

Steven responded, saying he loves that approach. He believes the best way to work is to follow your own vision – if people enjoy it, that’s fantastic, but if not, that’s okay too. He prefers to focus on doing what he thinks is best, rather than trying to predict what others will like.

Gabby asked if she was allowed to ask who would be playing James Bond. Steven jokingly replied that it would be Alan Brazil, the 66-year-old former footballer and talkSPORT presenter.

The next James Bond movie is in the works and will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune. Amazon MGM Studios is now in charge of the film, as Barbara Broccoli, who previously led the creative side, has stepped down.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the film through their production companies, Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films. Tanya Lapointe will be an executive producer on the project.

Steven described writing the next James Bond film as both ‘exciting and thrilling,’ but he’s taking a flexible, unconstrained approach to the script.

He said: ‘I have no plan of how I’m going to get there.

I know what’s going to happen with this character – they’ll go through a series of events, and ultimately either die or become king. That’s the basic outline of the story.

Last month, Steven shared with BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that being involved in the film was a long-held dream. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity and eagerness to begin work on it.

As a lifelong James Bond fan, I hope my passion for the series will shine through in my work. I aim to create something that honors the original spirit of Bond while also being fresh, impactful, and more exciting.

Several actors are being considered to take over the role, including Taron Egerton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Paul Mescal, and Theo James.

When asked about the next James Bond, he said it was a great question, but he couldn’t reveal the answer.

James Bond’s most recent film was ‘No Time to Die,’ released in 2021. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Cary Joji Fukunaga all contributed to the screenplay.

I remember Steven talking about how it all started – he got a call for a meeting with Amy Pascal, the producer. He had no idea what it was about at first, but it quickly became clear, and honestly, he was instantly thrilled and really hopeful about the project. It was a fantastic moment to hear him describe!

Typically, there’s a series of meetings and discussions where you explore different ideas, and eventually, you learn you’ve been selected.

‘So I found out a while ago but it was announced last night, which is great.’

He described the job as demanding, but emphasized the importance of simply doing your best work.
