The Stone Roses bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield dies aged 63 as his brother pays tribute

The Stone Roses bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield has died aged 63.

Gary Mounfield’s brother, Greg, shared the sad news of his passing on Facebook, writing, ‘It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of my brother. Rest in peace, Gary.’

He reportedly died at home after suddenly collapsing. His family said an ambulance was called, but paramedics were unable to save him.

It comes just two years after his wife Imelda Mounfield died from cancer.

Imelda, had twin sons, was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago.

Only six days ago, Mani announced an intimate conversation tour on the band’s website.

He planned to share stories from his career at events throughout the UK from September 2026 to June 2027. He would reminisce about memorable moments, including the famous 1990 Spike Ilsnad concert and the Stone Roses’ stadium tour when they reunited.

The review highlighted key elements of Mani’s work, mentioning ‘Fools Gold,’ iconic venues like Wembley Stadium and Ally Pally, legal battles, his distinctive style with bucket hats and Adidas, the album ‘Screamadelica,’ and the anticipation surrounding ‘The Second Coming.’ It concluded that this is what everyone has been waiting for.

She and her husband raised money for charity by holding auctions featuring items donated by celebrities like David Beckham and the band Oasis.

She explained to the BBC that she doesn’t want to constantly focus on cancer and being sick, as it takes over your thoughts.

Honestly, it was my way of finding some balance. Life was getting a bit much, and I needed a positive distraction – something else to focus on that would lift my spirits.

I definitely have tough days where my illness really affects me, and I experience unpleasant side effects. But I also make a real effort to keep going and appear as normal as possible, so sometimes people don’t even realize I’m struggling.

Mani, from Crumpsall in Manchester, rose to fame after joining The Stone Roses in the 1980s.

Mani Mounfield played bass on both Stone Roses albums and was with the band until they broke up in 1996. He then joined Primal Scream, but in 2011, he left that group to rejoin the reformed Stone Roses.

Following the news of his death on Thursday, heartfelt messages have been pouring in from musicians and fans around the world.
