HBO has renewed the crime thriller Task for a second season, following a hugely successful and critically praised first season. Initially intended as a limited series, Task centers on the intense dynamic between FBI agent Tom Brandis, played by Mark Ruffalo, and skilled thief Robbie Prendergrast, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey. The first season received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
HBO has officially renewed Task for a second season. According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, the show’s creator, Brad Ingelsby, will lead the new season. While details about the plot and which actors will return haven’t been announced yet, Francesca Orsi, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, expressed excitement about the show’s continuation.
We always believed this show would be a hit, and it’s been amazing to see audiences connect with it so strongly each week. It’s unusual for a writer to combine realistic, character-driven stories with thrilling twists and turns, but Brad Ingelsby is a true talent, and we’re confident his next season will be just as captivating.
Ingelsby also announced his return to the show, expressing gratitude to HBO for their support of Task, which quickly became one of their most popular first seasons ever. He’s enthusiastic about season two and what’s next for the story.
We’re incredibly grateful for HBO’s consistent support of TASK, starting with the initial script, continuing through production, and extending to their amazing launch of the first season. They’ve been a fantastic creative partner. The entire TASK team – everyone in front of and behind the camera – is thrilled and honored to begin work on a second season.
HBO is finding continued success with writer and creator Brad Ingelsby. Following the critically acclaimed miniseries Mare of Easttown in 2021 – which starred Kate Winslet and earned 16 Emmy nominations (winning four) and a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – his new show, Task, is also receiving positive reviews. Notably, Task marks the first time HBO has renewed one of Ingelsby’s limited series.

It’s uncertain how the show will continue after its renewal, as the first season wrapped up Tom and Robbie’s storyline neatly. Although HBO hasn’t confirmed if any actors will return, Mark Ruffalo’s character is the most likely candidate for a direct continuation of the story.
The show’s renewal means Mark Ingelsby will continue working with HBO beyond his original three-year contract, which he signed in 2021. While there’s no official release date for season 2 yet, creating a new season will likely take a significant amount of time. Season 1 took over a year to develop – starting in June 2023 and premiering in September 2025 – so fans should expect a similar wait for the next installment.
Despite mixed reviews, the success of Task on HBO suggests a second season is a natural next step. The show is also likely to be a contender during awards season, though nominations haven’t been revealed yet. Season 2 is expected to continue the show’s impact on HBO, and more details will be shared as it’s being made.
