2025 has been a fantastic year for movies, but one film stands out as a potential frontrunner for the best of the year – and maybe even the decade, according to Metacritic users! Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another marks the return of a celebrated director, features a stellar cast, and boasts a wildly imaginative story with thrilling, realistic action. Though it’s not yet available on streaming services like HBO Max, the film is available to buy digitally and has proven to be a success despite its initial box office performance.
Just days after becoming available for streaming, One Battle After Another is performing very well, currently topping the charts on both iTunes and Amazon. While it hasn’t made much impact on Google Play Store – where A Minecraft Movie has been number one for months – the new film is clearly a hit with audiences. One Battle After Another brings together Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio in a timely action thriller, and boasts an impressive cast including Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, Wood Harris, and Alana Haim.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays Bob, a former revolutionary now living a secluded life with his daughter, Willa. When Willa is kidnapped by someone from Bob’s past, he’s forced to confront his personal struggles and return to action to save her. The movie’s plot is unusual and the trailers highlight its quirky nature. However, director Paul Thomas Anderson is known for creating stories and characters that feel authentic and relatable, despite the outlandish premise.
Bob, a former revolutionary now living a secluded, paranoid life, raises his independent daughter, Willa, far from society. When a dangerous enemy from Bob’s past reappears and Willa vanishes, he’s forced to confront his history as they both fight to overcome the repercussions of their choices.

Whether One Battle After Another is the best film of the decade is up for debate, as judging art is always a matter of opinion. However, sites like Metacritic attempt to measure quality objectively. When it was first released, One Battle After Another received an almost perfect score of 97 on Metacritic, making it the highest-rated film of the decade on that website. While the score has since dipped slightly to 95, it remains an exceptionally high rating.
The film has been widely praised by critics. It currently has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Julian Roman of MovieWeb was among those giving it a positive review, writing:
Wow, Paul Thomas Anderson has really done something special with his latest film! It’s called One Battle After Another, and it totally blew me away. It’s a super intense, action-packed thriller, but it’s also surprisingly funny. What’s even more amazing is how it tackles some of the most controversial topics in America right now – it really gets you thinking!
