Shocking moment contestant on Hard Quiz stuns audience with outrageous answer to movie question – leaving host Tom Gleeson speechless

Tom Gleeson, the host of Hard Quiz, was completely surprised when a contestant gave an unexpected answer that shocked everyone in the studio.

The situation began during a Wednesday night broadcast on ABC when Gleeson posed a simple question about the 2010 movie The Social Network.

The movie ‘The Social Network’ begins with Mark Zuckerberg being broken up with, and his girlfriend bluntly tells him he’s disliked not because of who he is, but because of how he acts. This was the question Gleeson posed to the panel of four.

Contestant Mike was the first to buzz in. ‘Jew?’ he hopefully replied.

His answer soon elicited groans from the audience and an ‘incorrect’ from a giggling Gleeson.

The host encouraged contestants to answer quickly, playfully saying, ‘Come on, someone needs to break the silence!’

When no answer was forthcoming, Gleeson said the correct answer was ‘Nerd’.

‘It was just a guess,’ Mike protested, to which Gleeson offered: ‘Yes, it was just a guess.’

The show sparked conversation online, and one viewer tweeted about Hard Quiz, calling it ‘Absolutely wild stuff.’

Someone else reacted with disbelief, saying the correct answer was surprisingly simple and questioning how someone could struggle to find it.

Another person predicted the ABC would receive a lot of complaints from viewers upset about what happened.

‘ABC Ombudsman complaints inbox will be filling up after that one,’ they wrote.

This follows a pointed criticism made by Gleeson during his Logies acceptance speech in August, where he publicly called out Channel Seven.

During a live broadcast with MasterChef’s Poh Ling Yeow, the Gold Logie winner launched into a harsh, explicit criticism of the television network, claiming they unfairly give awards to their own personalities.

Look, as someone who’s seen a lot of awards shows, let me tell you, being nominated for a Gold Logie is a big deal. And when I heard the news about Poh, I had to say it – this isn’t something you joke about! It’s genuinely prestigious, and even my sarcastic side recognizes that. It’s fantastic!

Honestly, there’s really nothing negative I can say about winning the Gold Logie. I’m happy to poke fun at pretty much anything, even religion, but that award… it’s untouchable. It genuinely shifts things. I was hosting Hard Quiz before, I won, and, well, I still am – it’s just…different now. It’s a game-changer.

He then made a pointed remark about Channel Seven, saying they wouldn’t win any awards simply because they weren’t broadcasting on the network. He compared it to Channel Seven essentially awarding themselves prizes, suggesting it was like being invited to watch them celebrate their own success.

The audience burst into laughter, but Gleeson continued, reminding everyone watching that voting was still ongoing and encouraging them to support Poh.

Honestly, over a million of us are tuning in, and if we all voted for Poh, it could be a huge surprise – and I’m all about a good underdog story! Look, you can support whoever you want, of course, but if you’re undecided, I’m telling you, vote for Poh!

Poh chuckled with relief that Tom had said it for her. ‘Thanks, Tom,’ she said, ‘I was about to, but it would have been really awkward!’

Let me tell you, from what I’ve heard through the comedy grapevine – and straight from Dave Hughes himself – the Logies producers weren’t thrilled when Patrick Gleeson ad-libbed that rather adult joke. Apparently, going off script with material like that wasn’t part of the plan, and they let it be known!

He told Fifi, Fev & Nick on The Fox that he’s not using a teleprompter, and the Logies producers actually called him on Sunday to ask what he planned to say when he accepted his award.

‘I said, “I don’t know, just relax. No I’m not using the autocue.”‘

Tom Gleeson didn’t either. He had a bunch of prepared jokes that he didn’t tell, and instead just started making fun of Channel Seven.

‘It was funny and it was graphic, but it wasn’t on the autocue and they weren’t too happy.’
