The Stone family is coming back together for a new film, but they’ll be missing Sybil Stone, the character played by Diane Keaton. Director Thomas Bezucha recently shared that he was already developing a sequel to his 2004 movie, The Family, before Keaton sadly passed away last month at the age of 79.
The loss of the character Sybil has deeply affected me for months while working on the new film, and the news felt like a painful reminder of that grief, especially since the story picks up after her death, as happened in the first movie,” Bezucha told CNN. “I’ve been emotionally revisiting the setting and feeling her absence for quite some time now.”
The director said Bezucha was deeply moved by the project, explaining that losing his former colleague motivated him to both create a worthy sequel to the popular holiday film and ensure a positive experience for the returning cast, particularly the original ‘Stones’ actors, whose participation was crucial to his decision to move forward.
The Family Stone Sequel Will Keep It All in the Family
He told his producer he wouldn’t make another movie about the Brady family unless the original actress who played Jan was involved. While he’s firm on that condition, details about the sequel by Bezucha are still scarce.
The director confirmed the film’s script isn’t finished yet, and Disney hasn’t officially approved the project. Disney now owns 20th Century Fox, the studio that originally made The Family Stone. However, initial talks about getting the original actors back together seem to be progressing positively.
The director says the main actors from the movie – including Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, and Elizabeth Reaser – were all enthusiastic about the idea of making a sequel when first asked. However, as of now, none of them have officially committed to the project.
He recently saw the film and confirmed they had discussed working together again. He mentioned having lunch with the director of The Family Stone just the week before, and they talked a lot about Diane. He added that everyone was deeply saddened by her passing.
He continued, recalling his shock at how quickly his former co-star passed away. He’d actually spoken with her just a few days prior, which made the loss especially difficult. He also mentioned staying in contact with others involved with the film after her death.
The Family Stone is currently available to stream on Hulu.
