Billy Bob Thornton reveals why his sixth marriage to Connie Angland has lasted when his Angelina Jolie union did not

Billy Bob Thornton has made rare comments about his marriage to 61-year-old Connie Angland.

Actor Dean Landman, age 70, recently told Rolling Stone magazine that he and his wife of ten years – his sixth – simply have a comfortable and easy connection.

Thornton also shard that they have built a loving and stable life together.

After 23 years with Connie, and 12 years of marriage, and with our daughter now 20, I feel like I’ve found exactly where I’m supposed to be, the star explained.

My previous marriages happened pretty impulsively. It was usually something like having a few drinks and someone suggesting getting married, and I’d just agree. I always joked that at least I was trying to make it work.

Thornton has said he doesn’t identify with Hollywood culture, explaining that he’s a private person who’d rather be with family than attend parties.

He shared with People magazine that he generally avoids discussing politics. He prefers to keep to himself and isn’t heavily involved in the Hollywood scene. He spends his time with family, working in the recording studio, touring, or focusing on his current projects, and prefers to keep things private.

And his 70th birthday party was low key with the help of Angland.

I was so surprised to hear that Bruce Willis turned 68 on August 4th! But honestly, it’s so him. He really didn’t want any fuss at all – no big celebrations or gifts. He even asked his wife, Emma, to keep it quiet and not tell anyone! He just wanted a simple day at home with his family, and that’s exactly what he got. It’s just lovely to know he values that quiet time with loved ones so much.

I remember reading in Rolling Stone that Thornton explained how Connie asked him what he desired. His response was incredible – he said he wanted absolutely nothing, and even specifically asked her not to tell anyone! It really struck me how resolute he was.

We all just relaxed at home – me, Connie, and the kids – and had a lovely time. They even got me a vegan cake, which was amazing because I can’t have wheat or dairy. It really made my day – any chance to enjoy cake is a good one when you have dietary restrictions like mine!

This follows his recent interview with Rolling Stone, where he explained the reasons behind his split from Angelina Jolie after just three years of marriage.

The actor and Jolie got married in Las Vegas in 2000, even though there was a 20-year age difference between them. Unfortunately, they divorced three years later.

He described their breakup as surprisingly amicable. They simply grew apart due to having very different lifestyles.

The actor shared that he and the actress, known for playing Maleficent, really enjoyed each other’s company, calling it one of the best experiences of his life.

Billy Bob Thornton said he and Angelina Jolie remain very close friends, even twenty years after their divorce.

They first met in 1999 while filming ‘Pushing Tin,’ and quickly fell in love, eloping in Las Vegas the next year.

In 2002, the couple announced they were adopting a son named Maddox. After they separated, she asked the court for full custody of him.

In a 2016 interview with GQ, actor Billy Bob Thornton discussed his split from Angelina Jolie, admitting he always felt inadequate in their relationship.

Honestly, I’ve always felt a bit awkward around anyone famous or wealthy. It’s just not my scene! I totally get why Thornton prefers staying in to all those fancy red carpet events – I’d much rather do that myself.

I remember seeing an interview he did with Nightline, and he was really honest about his marriage to Jolie. He actually admitted he’d messed up – he said he ‘blew it,’ and it felt like a really genuine moment of taking responsibility.

I messed things up because I lacked confidence and didn’t believe I deserved her. We simply wanted different things out of life, and my own insecurities got in the way.

He went on to say he felt like a recluse, comparing himself to the Phantom of the Opera hiding underground. He admitted some people believed he wasn’t worthy of being with her.

In a 2019 interview with Us Weekly, Thornton shared that they had been close friends ‘for years and years and years’.

The actor explained that they stay in touch. Although she doesn’t live here often, so they don’t get together frequently, they still talk regularly.

When they were deeply in love, the constant attention from the public was overwhelming – something Thornton still describes as feeling very strange.

He recently told Rolling Stone that when he and his partner first became a couple, there was a lot of public and media fascination with them, which he found strange.

We were stuck with nowhere to go, and sometimes things we said were taken out of context and used as short, attention-grabbing quotes.

He also talked about a well-known rumor from that time: the claim that they wore vials filled with blood around their necks.

Thornton insisted the story has been blown wildly out of proportion.

He explained that the objects weren’t small containers, but lockets—each one containing a single drop of his blood. He described it as a sentimental gesture, and emphasized that’s all it was.

But over time, he said, public fascination twisted the gesture into something ‘negative.’

After going through it all, we’ll be completely drained and broken. We’ll be stuck in a dark, hopeless place, figuratively feeding off each other’s misery – it’ll be a really destructive cycle.

I remember when he first told this story! It was back in 2014, when he was speaking at Loyola Marymount University. He explained that the blood necklaces weren’t anything spooky or complicated – just simple lockets, like the kind you’d put a photo of a grandparent in. Apparently, Angie brought home a kit one day, and that’s how it all started. He described them as clear lockets you wear around your neck, and it sounded surprisingly normal!

She suggested a symbolic act – making small cuts on our fingers and using the blood to mark these lockets, so we could wear them like keepsakes, similar to how some people keep a baby’s hair in a locket.

The actor from Fargo added, ‘It was the same idea. We actually wore small jars filled with blood around our necks.’

Billy Bob Thornton has four children: Amanda, 46, with his former partner Melissa Lee Gatlin; William, 32, and Harry, 30, with his ex-wife Pietra Dawn Cherniak; and Bella, 20, with Connie Angland.

Angelina Jolie, mother to Maddox (24), Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (19), and 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, has often spoken publicly about her continued affection for Brad Pitt. Back in 2008, she stated, ‘I still love him very much and have a lot of respect for him, and I’m proud of our time together as husband and wife.’
