Martin Campbell has offered Denis Villeneuve some great advice when it comes to James Bond.
Throughout his career, Martin Campbell has directed two James Bond films: GoldenEye (1995), starring Pierce Brosnan, and Casino Royale (2006) with Daniel Craig. He’s also known for directing other films like The Mask of Zorro (1998), Vertical Limit (2000), The Legend of Zorro (2005), Green Lantern (2011), The Protégé (2021), and the upcoming Cleaner (2025), among others.
Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios, after the studio secured the rights from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. While there’s no news yet on when the movie will come out or who will star, Villeneuve is finishing up ‘Dune: Part Three’ before starting work on the 007 project.
What did Martin Campbell say to Denis Villeneuve about James Bond?
To mark the 30th anniversary of GoldenEye, director John Campbell shared some guidance with Denis Villeneuve and the team currently developing the next James Bond film.
According to Campbell, the next Bond film shouldn’t be a complete overhaul of the existing formula. He believes classic Bond films like GoldenEye and Casino Royale still hold up today and that a strong, well-made film in the same vein is all that’s needed. He essentially urges filmmakers not to unnecessarily change what already works, emphasizing that there’s plenty of potential for fresh stories, especially given current world events. He reiterated his point, hoping they won’t disrupt a successful formula.
When asked about potential future James Bond actors, producer Michael G. Wilson noted that there isn’t anyone currently obvious like Pierce Brosnan was in his time. He pointed out that Daniel Craig wasn’t a huge star when he was cast, and credited Barbara Broccoli with taking a chance on him. Wilson believes they’re looking for another actor like Craig – not necessarily a famous name, but a talented performer who fits the role. He emphasized that James Bond and the films themselves are the real stars, and they just need to find a great actor who looks the part.
