A beloved but often overlooked science fiction series is returning with new installments on Prime Video. Originally a film in 1994 and later a web series ending in 2008, it’s one of several projects recently approved by Amazon MGM Studios.
It’s Stargate – a series known for a special, ring-shaped device that creates wormholes, allowing for incredibly fast travel through space.
The series has appeared on television before with shows like Stargate SG-1, which aired from 1997 to 2007, Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009), and Stargate Universe (2009-2011).

Pop culture critics generally view it favorably, with Collider calling it “underrated” and Variety describing it as “iconic.”
According to Deadline, Martin Gero will be the creative force behind the new series. He’ll write, produce, and oversee the show as its creator, executive producer, and showrunner.

The brand appears to be in capable hands, as Gero gained valuable television experience working on another Stargate series.
He shared that his first professional television job, twenty years prior, was as a Story Editor for the show Stargate: Atlantis.
I basically grew up making TV on the Stargate franchise – I spent five years working on all three shows, and it really shaped how I think about storytelling. It’s a huge part of who I am as a creator! So I’m incredibly excited that Amazon MGM Studios is letting me lead Stargate into the future. It feels like coming home.
This is for our dedicated fans who’ve supported us through events, re-watched our content, and always believed in us. And to everyone discovering our world for the first time, we promise you’re about to experience something amazing.
Nick Pepper, who leads US streaming TV development at Amazon MGM Studios, stated that Stargate is a long-lasting and beloved franchise that has fascinated viewers for decades with its imaginative look at humanity’s role in the universe.

We’re thrilled to begin a new era for this cherished series, working with our talented team—Martin, Tory Tunnell, and Joby Harold. We’re bringing it to Prime Video audiences worldwide with a story that respects its history while also being bold, moving, and full of potential.
I was really excited to hear that Roland Emmerich – the director who made the original Stargate movie back in ’94 – is joining as an executive producer! That’s the guy who kicked off the whole on-screen universe, so it’s awesome to have him involved.
Amazon MGM is also planning reboots or continuations of other popular franchises. These include a prequel to Legally Blonde called Elle, and a Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner.
There is no release date info for this new Stargate offshoot just yet.
