Cynthia Erivo shared that her sister was a vital source of support during difficult times in her career. She explained that her sister has been a stabilizing presence throughout both their challenging childhood and Erivo’s journey to international success.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! I just found out that Idina Menzel, my absolute idol, had such a tough start! Apparently, her dad just…left. Left her and her sister, Stephanie, when they were little! Can you imagine? It was just her and Stephanie with their amazing mom, Edith, trying to make it in south London. It makes everything she’s achieved even more incredible, honestly. It breaks my heart, but wow, what a strong family!
He eventually stopped all contact with his daughters, completely cutting them out of his life. When Cynthia was sixteen, he told them during a quick meeting at a subway station that it would be the last time they ever saw him, and he kept that promise.
On James Corden’s podcast, Cynthia described her sister Stephanie as truly one-of-a-kind, saying she’s unlike anyone she’s ever met and that she feels fortunate to have her in her life.
She approaches life with incredible thoughtfulness, carefully considering everything from her diet and self-care to her communication and relationships. She possesses a level of self-awareness that’s rare in most people.
You know, if I could talk to my sister right now, I’d tell her thank you. Thank you for believing in me back in 2015, even when I wasn’t quite able to believe in myself. It means the world to me that she saw my potential before I did.

Cynthia worked in theatre for many years before achieving widespread recognition in 2015. Her first Broadway role in The Color Purple was a turning point, earning her a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award and launching her film career.
Cynthia highlighted Stephanie’s kind nature, pointing out that it’s evident even in small gestures. She mentioned a recent dinner in London, which they affectionately call ‘sister time’ whenever Cynthia visits.
We both prioritize healthy eating, and I discovered a fantastic vegan restaurant that I thought we’d both enjoy.
We were having a great dinner conversation, and when it was time to pay, she surprised me by suggesting we split the bill. She explained she’s making a conscious effort to be more present and nurturing in her relationships and friendships.
As someone who believes in healthy relationships, I really value fairness and kindness between partners. To me, splitting things evenly feels like the best way to maintain that balance and ensure we’re always treating each other with respect. It just creates a sense of equality that I think is so important.
Cynthia explained that she was really impressed her colleague had even thought about it. At their level in their careers, she said, there’s often an assumption they’d cover the cost themselves, and she’d be happy to do so.
It’s just so touching that she wanted to share this experience with me, regardless of anything I could offer. It shows what a kind and generous person she is – she truly doesn’t want anything in return, just my time.
She also mentioned that Stephanie’s down-to-earth personality still influences their relationship, even with Stephanie becoming incredibly famous over the past ten years.
She doesn’t care about material possessions, she just wants to be with me. My sister is great because she’s genuine, and she loves spending time with me on long walks.
She enjoys casual conversations about everyday life, like skincare and her favorite foods – especially cheese! We’re also happy to discuss fashion, shopping, and creative ways to reuse old items.
She also commended her sister’s dedication to helping people facing serious illnesses improve their health with better nutrition and exercise.
Cynthia described her as incredibly intelligent, but explained that her main purpose in life is to help others, and she isn’t focused on getting rich doing so.
