Marvel Comics became known for creating characters who weren’t typical heroes and villains. Their heroes, despite being admirable, often had personal struggles, while their villains were frequently portrayed with understandable motivations or even positive qualities. A recent comic book storyline highlighted this balance when a villain ultimately made a selfless sacrifice, costing them their life.

In the latest issue of One World Under Doom (#9), written by Ryan North and illustrated by R.B. Silva, a major event unfolded during the peak of a battle. Doctor Doom, having become the Sorcerer Supreme and ruler of Earth, was already fighting the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. The tide turned when Valeria Richards, the daughter of Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, unexpectedly joined the fray. Doom had previously declared himself her godfather, offering support to Sue Storm during a difficult childbirth while Reed Richards was away, establishing a unique connection with the powerful young hero.

Valeria went into the war zone determined to reason with her godfather, but she was tragically caught in the fighting and killed immediately. This event sparked a series of consequences that would dramatically alter the Marvel Universe, ultimately leading Doctor Doom to make an unimaginable sacrifice.
Why did Doctor Doom die and sacrifice himself?
Despite his overwhelming ambition, Doctor Doom truly loved Valeria Richards, and she meant more to him than anything else. A recent comic, One World Under Doom #9, explored their bond by revisiting beloved scenes from classic Marvel stories.

Haunted by the knowledge that his choices led to Valeria’s death, Doctor Doom attempts to prove himself by battling powerful cosmic entities. When those attempts fail, he swallows his pride and pleads for mercy from the Living Tribunal, the Marvel Universe’s ultimate judge of fairness.
The Living Tribunal examined Doctor Doom’s heart and verified his genuine love and desire for redemption. Because of this, it agreed to reshape reality throughout the Marvel Universe, even though Doom’s magic had locked the battle itself in time. But this came at a cost: Doom would lose his position as Sorcerer Supreme, his life, and his very soul. He accepted these terms immediately.

The story of One World Under Doom concludes with widespread chaos, sparked by fighting between those who supported Doom and those who opposed him. Many, including Reed Richards, believe Doom’s true intentions went beyond simply rescuing his goddaughter. The consequences of Doom’s death will be further examined in a new mini-series called The Will of Doom.
One World Under Doom #9 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
